"Full of the sound of the Gran Fury, signifying nothing." (granfury)

What happened to the Fry’s Electronics ads I used to remember running several times a week at the back of major sections of the main newspapers? I know print journalism is almost dead, but I still expected to see at least one ad. Friday morning, when there would usually be the big multi-pager, there’s nothing.
I did stop in at the Burbank location a couple of days ago to get a power supply for a friend’s computer and some Blu-ray media (and a candy bar I haven’t seen in ages):
The place was pretty much as I remember it, but it was a bit quieter than I recall. Was it just because it was Wednesday afternoon, or because massive retailers are a dying breed in the age of Amazon?

It’s online, like everything else:

Fry’s is definitely in major trouble financially so I cant imagine they have the money to spend on lots of advertisement. I have one within walking distance of my apartment in Woodland Hills. There is nothing I can get from there that I wouldnt rather just get from Amazon. But it is convenient if I REALLY want something immediately rather than waiting a day for 1 day shipping. I have gone there for a few odds and ends but it is kind of like walking into a time machine in those stores. Not as bad as going to like a K-mart but it certainly has similar vibes to me. That store is HUGE and it is always empty and there are a ton of workers wandering around. So their overhead has to be ruining any profit margins they can muster.

I like going in to wander around on a lazy Friday evening (holy shit when did I become an old?). Their pricing usually isn’t too bad and they will match prices, but I’ve still never bought anything major from them. Maybe I should. I went there to listen to some speakers and check out receivers before I started assembling my HT system but I ended up buying my main speakers direct from the manufacturer on clearance (Fry’s didn’t have the model I wanted), my receiver open box from Amazon, my rear speakers from Woot (they randomly had a good deal on the models I wanted), and my sub from a speaker component company in Ohio. So I guess I’m contributing to killing Fry’s, which is a bummer because it’s a cool store.

I desperately hope Frys doesn’t fail. With Radio Shack gone, it’s my last best hope of being able to browse a wide variety of electronics equipment.
Sure, I could order things online, but I rarely know what to look for. The joy of discovery is much more tangible in a physical store.

Any Micro Centers around? I honestly don’t understand how they stay in business, but it’s like a more focused version of Fry’s.
