I need y’all’s oppopinions about a vehicle purchase for my aged in-laws.
Current Situation:
My 94 year-old father-in-law’s 2008 Buick Enclave has officially “seen better days.” Before we finally got him to stop driving (at 91
!!!) he tagged just about every panel on the thing on one pillar in their parking garage or another. He decided to have a “mobile body repairer” “fix” the damage and was thrilled at how little it cost. Unfortunately his poor vision didn’t make it apparent enough to him that, when it comes to bodywork, you get what you pay for. So now they are facing some 3500-4000 in needed repairs on the battered beast. My MiL wisely does not wish to dump more money into it; if it was in better shape, I’d disagree with her but, y’all, this thing is pretty roached at this point.
Ok, Now What?:
SO ... now they want to replace it with a used whip. My middle-aged bro-in-law lives with them and drives them to all their (numerous) doctor’s appointments, etc. Their budget is no more than $20k and they liked the comfort and ride height of the Enclave but are open to a more traditional layout this go-round. They (wisely) do not want a new car; they can afford it but since they are putting so few miles on their car now, it seems pointless.
I’d love your recommendations!

Since he won’t be driving, the visibility problem of another SUV or many newer sedans/etc. won’t be as apparent, but it might still be good to go all in on camera. A relevant question would be how often your brother in law and both of them will be going somewhere at once, because sedan rear seat access is kind of shitty these days - and many SUVs as well. This may sound crazy, but a minivan with its sliding rear doors is definitely a possibility.
Or, (call me crazy) a Toyota pickup (ride height as Enclave) with the Access Cab. The rear seat isn’t roomy at all, but to get in the front is easy, and with the doors open, would actually be easier to get into than the Double Cab.

hard to find a bad car with that budget. Get the easiest thing they can get in and out of...not sure they’ll care too much about the rest. If they liked the Enclave they can look at Traverse’s and Acadia’s to fit a newer model into the budget.
Do they want a car Enclave sized or smaller?

I think they’d like something a little smaller. They bought the Enclave with thoughts of carting grandkids around and now the grandkids cart them around lol.

I’d want something with a comfy rear seat for my FiL. My MiL usually sits in the front passenger seat and my BiL is usually driving them.

sounds like a crossover would be good, they’re easy to get in and out of. Good resale value might be good too. Personally I’m thinking Subaru Forester, big doors mean getting in and out is easy, a comfortable height, and depreciation is pretty low, relatively speaking

4wd necessary or no?

I kind of wish there were more vehicles with a full rear seat and a pillarless or minimal pillar suicide door. Failing that, hearing that transporting both is fairly regular, I would have to say four-door Tacoma/Colorado or minivan. The height of the door aperture can be a surprisingly big factor.

Subaru Outback. That's what my grandparents have and they seem to like it and are able to get in and out of it pretty well. My grandpa is 89 for reference.

if they want compact the Ford Ecosport and the Chevy Trax are high sitting and used models can probably be found under $20k. I’ve not yet been in the Ford, but the Chevy I have. It’s basic, cheap transportation that can be had with remaining warranty or certified.

Ford Flex. The doors are huge, it's super roomy and comfy, and the ride and seat height are spot-on to get right in or out of without having to squat down or pull up.

Glad to help!
I’m kinda sad we didn’t buy one. The CX-5 we got instead is great. My wife decided she wanted a smaller vehicle, but that Flex was sure comfy. Not to mention we both loved the looks of the Flex.
