Today’s transport to San Diego is a Delta 737-900ER...:

United was very aggressive about getting them deployed on their newer 737s.

WHAT IF....they just said “I meant to do that” when there was some sort of delamination at the wingtip?

I hate to be that guy, but I think the 900ER is about the end of their ideas for the 737. It’s like if Porsche just built an air-cooled 911 for 50 years but kept upgrading everything, but basically left the body alone.
Wait, that actually sounds great.

Edumacate me, what does the split scimitar winglets do that a single scimitar winglet does not?

The split scimitar does the same job as any winglet, Sharklet ™ , or wingtip wing fence, which it to reduce wingtip vortices, reduce drag, and increase mileage. You can do the same thing with a raked wingtip like on this 748, but that increases the wingspan. In fact, the latest 777X will have raked wingtips that fold up at the gate. The Navy’s new P-8 Poseidon, based on the 737-800ERX will have even longer raked wingtips. Almost all of the technological developments currently underway are designed around fuel savings.

It’s a kit.

That’s what I thought but wasn’t sure if there was a perceivable
advantage of one over the other.

My understanding is that traditional wingtips/wing fences are better in dense low altitude air, but are not optimal for cruising, which is why you have the raked wingtips on the wide- bodies, which spend most of their time on long-haul routes, as opposed to the much shorter flights of the narrow- bodies. The P-8 is an exception, because unlike a normal 737 that will normally fly short flights, the P-8 is expected to spend as much time as possible in the air.

I have read that the split gives a minimal advantage over other winglets, but certainly enough for some airlines to pursue them.

the split kit doesn’t require the whole wing to be replaced. Just the tip
