Sc400s had power steering and hydraulic fan oil
coolers (hydro fan being the little radiator) but nothing for engine oil. The next gen uz’s had a water to oil heat exchanger.

Everytime you tear into your 1UZ, I hug my comparatively archaic 2JZ.

A cooler for the fluid used in the hydraulic fan, what else would the heat exchanger be doing?

The system runs on dextron 2, al ong with the powersteering.(They are seperate systems with seperate reservoirs) You can see the reservoir on the right, the system is driven by the accessory belt. If I remem ber correctly the system was used because it has less parasitic loss than a traditional fan or electric fan setup.(in 1990 when they were designing it)

So it’s literally a hydraulic motor? Seems crazy from an nvh standpoint. Neat. Glad my uz has a sealed fan clutch

There is no noise or vibration(besides wind motion) , electric fans are worse from a vibration standpoint. This being 1990 lexus im sure the its not a traditional pump design.

Probably gerotor since it doesn’t need a lot of torque. Crazy Toyota.
