I’m going to sell the ‘89 Camry and send the Versa to live with my daughter at school. Consumer Reports calls out the Mazda 6 as a super-reliable used car bet, but they recommend the ‘09-12 model. This one seems like a good price, but it’s already got 114k miles on the clock.

I haven’t owned a 6. My wife had an '06 3 for eight years, and since then we've had a '15 CX-5 for nearly four years now. They've both been excellent. Each one only experienced one part failure, both with the stereo head unit. The 3's CD changer broke, and the CX-5's touch screen failed. Other than that, nothing but maintenance. I'm really happy with our Mazdas.

Did either of them rust?

My 06 3 has rust issues for sure, but nothing structural and nothing worse than a contemporary Chrysler product.
It’s a lso has some front end problems that are proving difficult , but it was in a front end collision with the previous owner, so I suspect that has something to do with it.. .

Had a Mazda 6 (previous gen) for a couple of weeks as a rental. Really impressed, though I thought a manual would really make it a blast to drive.
On the west coast Mazda rust isn’t an issue. I have a ‘97 NA, and we lived on the CT shoreline, for 4 years close to saltwater and I kept it in a carport. No ill effects - it seems from my experience a lot of the rust issues with Mazdas are mostly road salt related.
I’d say NP, especially with the manual, if it drives/looks as good as it does in the pictures.

I don’t like that listing. Price is really low... The only current-gen Mazda 6 around me for less than 10 grand has a rebuilt title. No interior photos...

Thanks. He hasn't replied to a text yet. Too new for me anyhow. And probably too many options. But I think the Mazda 6 is going to be the car for me. I need a previous-gen one with a manual transmission.

Actually, no. I heard Mazda switched steel suppliers around '04/'05. I see plenty of late first gen 3's, like my wife's was, without rust.

Buddy of mine who is in town this weekend bought a ‘14 brand new, having cross-shopped it with the Camry, Accord, and Passat. It’s at 85k miles now, he’s had zero issues, and he loves it. He likes my new one more, but he’s fairly certain that his’ 14 has quite a few more years of use in it.
I think if you find the right one, you can buy with confidence.

Your nose knows, it seems. I shared a text with the guy, finally. “Car’s at my job in Fremont (20 miles away), but if you want to see it, I’ll run and get it for you.”
“Do you have a minute to chat about the car on the phone?”
No reply.
Along with the CL listings you sent, I’d definitely say you spotted a shady listing.

Thank you. I think I want a 2011 though, last year of the previous generation. And with a manual transmission.

I drive a ‘14 6 grand touring, it’s been a great car. Mine has 67k mil es, j ust regular maintenance you’d expect at appropriate intervals. I talked to one guy who said one of his adaptive headlights got stuck at some weird angle and had to be replaced but that’s the worst I’ve heard.

Thanks. Consumer Reports recommends the '09-11 model as a best used car buy. The made some of those with five-speed manuals, but they're about as rare as hens' teeth and many that are listed as manuals are actually automatic.
