Florida Man (duh) gets fatally shot in classic controversial Stand Your Ground case.
After a heated text message exchange with his on-again, off-again girlfriend, Jason Boek followed an Uber he thought was giving her a ride home. Driving along a dark stretch of two-lane road in central Florida, Boek swerved his pickup truck early Tuesday morning in front of the rideshare car. Uber driver Robert Westlake slammed on his brakes.
They narrowly avoided a crash and stopped in the middle of the roadway.
Then, Boek jumped out of his truck and quickly walked toward Westlake’s Hyundai Elantra.
“You know I got a pistol?” Boek said, holding an object in the air. “You want me to f****** shoot you?”
Bang. With one shot, the Uber driver killed him. The Sheriff’s Office later confirmed Boek had a cell phone in his hand.
Westlake then called 911 and attempted CPR on Boek. Authorities said Westlake is a concealed weapon permit holder and a licensed armed security guard who also just finished the police academy.
“This is a justifiable homicide all day long,” said Sheriff Grady Judd of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, during a press conference. “You have the right to protect yourself. This is a classic stand your ground case. This was the intent of the law.”
Florida’s “stand your ground” law says people have no “duty to retreat” if they believe they must use deadly force to prevent death or serious injury.

Honestly, as a Canadian who is appalled by stand your ground, this is 100% legit. Even if you shot him in Canada you probably would have been ok other than the firearms charges.

Pretty stupid to be making threats like that in a state where people get shot over standing in a McDonald’s line.

I’m a sick bastard but saying “ oh my god”* right after you shoot someone is hilarious. What did you expect? That’s what happens when you shoot someone. I get the passengers saying but, the not one who pulled the trigger.

That’s such a t errible message. The dudebro was still a human being and he’s still dead, there should be a modicum of reverence to the weight of the situation regardless of how glad we as a society should be to have one less dudebro to deal with.
It’s still tragic when an asshole is killed, we’re just allowed to laugh at their actions without feeling too bad.

something something “gun control means hitting your target... ”
I’m a socialist-disolutionist-lefty and I own guns. The NRA is a bunch of crazy fucktards, but this part is mostly true: “guns don’t kill people, people kill people”.
My agreement with the above statement doesn’t mean I don’t believe in sane and well considered limitations to the weapons people are all owed to obtain easily for use in killing other people.
yeah, idiot in the truck maybe didn’t deserve death, but he sure did play that stupid game like he was angling for the stupid grand prize.

If you read the story from CNN the Uber driver is shaken up that he had to even do that and unintentionally kill somebody in the process of defending himself.

Well, that was quite a turn. When you opened this post by calling it a Stand Your Ground case, I thought you were just being sarcastic. I watched the video and thought that the pickup driver shot the Uber driver in cold blood.
But the story said otherwise, which I thought was a typo at first until I watched
the clip again. Yeah, that does look like a phone... Not that there’s much time to react when the pickup driver is calling it a pistol.

Shooting someone dead just for getting shoved and possibly getting away with it. This is why I said “standing your ground” is controversial. It’s very clear he was typical wannabe tough guy crazy gun owner itching for a chance to “take some one out” the moment he “felt threatened”
Records show Drejka does not have a criminal history in Florida, although the Sheriff’s Office had prior contact with him in 2012 when a driver accused him of pulling a gun during a road rage incident. Drejka denied he showed the gun, and the accuser declined to press charges. McGlockton’s history included a drug conviction in 2010 and an arrest for aggravated battery a decade ago, records show, but the charge was dropped.

Agreed that it’s controversial. In both this case and the one in the OP, the shooter was not the aggressor though.
There’s also a difference between shoving somebody and shoving somebody hard enough that they fall.

Not buying it one bit. Maybe the lady who he was aggressively harrasing over a simple parking violation should have shot this asshole and claimed she was threated because she could be fearing for life as angry middle aged men could quite possibly be carrying a gun. Technically the guy was defending the woman was he not? Becuause, if you can get killed for shoving someone comes looking for a fight that is a slippery slope which means verbal arguments could also be justified in some cases .But then she is black and the shooter is white so you know how these cases would go. Read the article fully, he went looking for trouble. He could have just called the cops instead, but no. He WANTED that confrontation. He couldnt let it slide. He has manslaughter charges now becuase shoving someone is not reason to get killed as the lawyers have argued. Have you never been to a place where people get drunk? People get shoved and shove back all the time, except in Florida where you can apparently kill someone over it. It’s not like a poor old helpless man who was jumped by someone and shoved down to the ground and beatrn and had no choice but to defend himself from a vicious attack. N ormal people don’t do this shit not even responsible concealed carry owners I would assume.
That is not the same case as swerving into someone nearly causing an accident, walking up to the car threatening them saying you have a pistol and saying you would kill them AND pulling out something that looks like a gun and point it at the other guy who had done absolutely nothing even remotely aggressive but just doing his job. Uber driver is justified, the parking lot vigilante is not.

Where do I start with that?
hunting, you intend to eat the meat, not spend a month picking pieces of lead out. two, if the deer gets away, nothing happens. Three, most jurisdictions limit the amount of rounds in the gun from 3 to 5, most hunting weapons are manually actuated. Most animals also run away when you shoot at them. for most dangerous game, large caliber rifles are used to guarantee an instant kill, wheras most cops are armed with handguns. Four, most departments don’t have enough funds or staff to train their officers constantly. five, if your life was at stake you would absolutely positively insure that the motherfucker was dead. People survive multiple gunshots all the time.
I mean seriously.

You’re right, it shouldn’t be celebrated, but it’s a good lesson for others. Don’t ever pretend like you have a gun. Cause you never know if the other person does. I’m just glad this guy had a dashcam. That really s aved him a lot of headache.

hit probability. it’s like rolling dice. Why not roll 20 at once?
like I said, when you shoot at someone it’s best to insure that they actually die. it’s hard to argue against a literal wall of bullets. shooting pistols is hard when you don’t train, vs rifles which are actually pretty easy.

My problem with it though is that they’re not judge, jury and executioner. You don't need the person to die. W hen it does goes bad, 8 bullets in someone’s back gives them no chance.
My bird IS the word

09/04/2018 at 14:03 | 0 |
I still ties in to weapon s training. A single bullet, even in somebodys leg, can kill them. Bullets ricochet off of bones all the time. Inversely, some people like 50 cent can survive multiple gunshots. If you shoot someone, even once, it has to be with the in tent to kill. At that point, you shouldn’t be shooting anyone if you don’t want to kill them.
If there was some instant knockout dart like in the movies, the cops would be using that. I'm not defending police murders. I'm defending the training doctrine and use of force policies.
