I have got this crazy idea stuck in my head lately about buying an old crew cab square body Chevy/GMC and sticking the body on a way better frame, like 1999+. I would also cut the cab floor out of the square body and swap in the floor of the newer truck to make everything bolt together better and get the nicer seats. Same with the dash. The problem is I have no money for these bad (GREAT!!!!!) ideas.

Like this one is ideal! Looks complete AND it's the front end that I love the most. Screw that 1991 Suburban nonsense, this one is the sex. I would not be keeping it a dually and would make it a short bed. I would want to source a wrecked 99+ 2500HD or bigger. Ugh money is dumb.

square body Chevy/GMC and sticking the body on a way better frame,

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think Chevy went to a dramatically wider frame after the squarebody, with different dropdowns and points of support. Very possible absolutely nothing would line up easily, if at all.

after all is said and done, you will have a franken truck and not many people will want to buy it. It’s not a good financial move.

It’s a fun hobby tho.... When you have money.

I don’t argue with you there. That’s why I plan on also swapping the cab floor to hopefully address that issue. The bed floors could be swapped also but wouldn’t be hard to figure out either. The front end is based off the core support so that requires more screwing around.

Don’t care if someone else wants to buy it. IT'S MINE FOREVER MWAHAHAHA!!! Also, since when do people on Oppo support sound financial moves that involve cars? That's what I thought, never.

“and sticking the body on a way better frame,”

So you want to put it on a stretched Tesla Model S P100D chassis, right? RIGHT?

Depends on condition of the frame. You may be better served by gutting everything and treating any rust, and then just doing an engine swap to get a newer drivetrain in.

The truck you posted is an excellent candidate for a 12v Cummins.

Assuming that you have a big enough garage (and hammer), you should be able to get everything done in the $20k range. Lots of hours of work though. Would be a neat truck to have then.

yeah, see though, the frame is shaped totally different, and like you have heard would require an entirely reshaped floor......... but what i dont get, is the hang up on 99 and newer? if you were after the longer springs, you could always snag the mounts and springs off of the newer truck, and if it was the awkward redesign of the front section, you could get pretty near the same results by boxing what is there.( yeah it would be labor intensive)..........

youre doing what a bunch of my younger engine building friends do. the hunt down a virgin, standard block. has to have no damage or scoring. has to have good compression. has to have a standard, unturned crank, has to have original heads on it, and all the accessory parts, intake timing covers, fuel pump, distributor. all that jazz........ but then they turn RIGHT AROUND and cut the bores 60, and throw away the standard crank for an aftermarket one, and replace all the rods while they are there, and then switch over to electric fuel and water pumps, along with electic fans, they throw away the stock heads(that it NEEDED to have) for aftermarket aluminium........ long way of saying, that they could of gotten by buying a beaten down bare block instead of just wasting everything.......

i guess i am trying to say “why not just look for a 73-80 crew cab cab?” you already have it on your mind to throw away the rest of the truck......... you might find a larger pool of potentials too.......

I think this is a really fun idea that you should follow through on and post lots of build pics of.

I basically want kind of a restomod. I want IFS. That’s the biggest reason for the newer frame. You're  right, I would be tossing a lot of the truck away. I also want LS, that's why 99+ and not 88+.

I want 4X4 and IFS that's why I want newer frame. I would prefer gas over diesel. I want to possibly experiment with boost. I hate how solid axle front end trucks ride.

Jeff Lutz (drag racer) bought a quad cab dually a year or two ago. It is a square body from OK with some nice patina. His son and friends laid it out on an air suspension. He then swapped in a late-model diesel drivetrain.

I liked their truck a lot aside from the rims. Before they changed the time I really liked it. I want Lutz Jr's EF Civic really bad.

The Civic is great! Junior also owns Jeff’s OG 57 Drag Week car. Must be nice...
