Kinja'd!!!

On my way to go swap pads and rotors I noticed an issue. At around 40 mph the steering wheel started shaking violently and the car was making quite a racket. I pull into the gas station and there is smoke coming from the front end. My first thought was cooling (#justE46things) but no, it was my front brake producing a fuckton of smoke. I’m waiting for a tow truck now and it’ll go to someone who can really fix her up and get her ready to go or the mechanic can just keep it.

That's what it seems like, I knew the rear brakes were trashed but I didn't expect the fronts to go out on me.

I think I'd rather have a bike crash than car crash.

Bye-bye brakes . Bye-bye, stoppingness. Hello, towingness, I think I’m gonna cry.

Bye-bye brakes. Bye-bye Bavarianness. Hello, checkbook test, I think I may just die.

It really might be one of those "yeah, just keep it" scenarios with the mechanic. I'm sure he could part it out.

ABS or traction control issues? It could be constantly trying to “brake vector” if it’s getting weird wheel speed inputs

Stuck caliper, warped rotor.

All in all it was all just bricks in the wall.

One of the rear shocks is shot, brakes all around, and the headliner is falling a bit. It actually works pretty good most of the time. It's a great around town winter car.

... wait, are you serious? What else goes wrong with these? I mean BMW is obviously not the pinnacle of reliability to begin with. But... seriously, that’s all?

Here the only picture of my German spec 1998 318i, it was such a piece of shit. Then when I came back to the US I got the black car and it has had issues for a long time. As much as I love the cars I'll never buy another unless it's an M.

Cooling is a huge problem. My 1998 318i killed itself that way. They are solid cars if you're on top of your shit, my car has 145k on it with no major repairs yet.

I seem to be absorbing all the BMW cooling problems for the rest of you, like an unreliability sponge. In the time I’ve owned this car every cooling c omponent save a few hoses has been replaced.

S hit. Well, if you hang onto it at least a few more weeks, I may actually be interested. Onyxia is not for winter driving.

I'll keep Oppo posted on the status of it, hit this post back up in a few weeks if you're serious.

They certainly can be nightmares of maintenance. I did a lot on my old one, and it was all reasonable DIY stuff; this one I got just after the previous owner took a serious bath and did a ton of stuff that comes with the 120k-mile territory, so I’ve done far less to my current one, up to 171k as of today.
