I went autocrossing and convinced the other members of my FSAE team that we should bring the car out. We expected to be upper-mid pack but I ended up switching classes for the afternoon when we discovered that the car had the pace to run for fastest of the day. We came 4th, .5s off a podium that included a pair of heavily modified Miatas and an Ultima Can Am. This thing is a workout to drive but it’s damn fast.

Those STR ND miatas are fast

Tey weren’t even STR compliant. One was supercharged making about 300hp and on 10 inch wide Hoosiers and the other was stripped (including missing doors) , widened, and had basically every part on the car upgraded (and also on Hoosier slicks). These two cars are consitienly several seconds faster than everything else that shows up. Today they were split by an Ultima Can Am which is a freaking Ultima.

I wish I could have done fsae. Neither of my schools had programs.

It has been tons of fun and a great learning experience. An FSAE team was actually one of my requirements when looking at schools.

I’m going to miss it when I graduate this year and am probably going to do something stupid like buying an F1600 to try to fill the void.

It is as far as you can go with a Miata short of building an Exocet. The driver of the supercharged Miata typically runs an Exocet but the ‘cet is in MA at the moment because he did an event at Thompson last week and is running Lime Rock this week. The stripped Miata is always right there with the Exocet.

Pitt and cmu are the only schools in Pittsburgh that have fsae. My grades weren't good enough for pitt main and I didn't even bother with cmu. Thanks foreigners.

What does an F1600 cost? I haven’t looked at the market for actual race cars.

Yeah, this is a terrible idea.

Spec Miata or Spec Porsche is way cheaper.

They range from ~$15k for a vintage Formula Ford to $60k for a brand new, modern, nationally competitive Formula 1600. If you’re looking for a project race car then you can get one for under $15k but you’ll have to put more money into it. Formula Vee is even cheaper but they’re painfully slow.

apexspeed.com is the best place for info on all things amateur open wheel, and they have classified forums.

Motors are a pair of Lynch LMC200s which share a shaft and are wired in series. They are permanent magnet DC motors. The batteries are 32 LiFePo4 cells wired in series for 102V nominal. On the fast run we had our Zilla 1k motorcontroller turned up to allow for 600A which is the most we can safely provide from our cells.

Cool, didn’t realize it was a Formula E car.  We took our FSAE car to some autocrosses, they are a riot on there.
