$ 1,800, 118k miles , seems taken care of well enough, only one concern. It’s on the original clutch. I could most likely replace it myself, but I live in an apartment with an asphalt parking lot, in Texas. So it’s something I’d really like to avoid doing myself.
I remember when I replaced the clutch on my old (EG) Civic, I got a quote from a shop out of curiosity , and they quoted me $500. Would a clutch job on this be a similar price? Because if it was something around there I wouldn’t mind at all just paying for a shop to do it.
However automotive stuff seems to be kind of expensive around here. In WA shops would press out and in bushings and balljoints for $10, here everyone wanted $75 for it, so I’m not sure if I should expect a 500-$700 clutch job on this around here. I’ll call a shop tomorrow and get a quote just to see though.

Find out which engine. If it's 1.5, just say no. If it's the 1.6 it could be worth it.

Not sure about that gen, but I have an 2009 Accent MC hatch (the generation after that one) and it’s been very reliable. I’ve had very few problems with it to get repaired, but the few I’ve had to deal with have been very reasonable and minor. If you could find a 2006-2010 generation Accent or Kia Rio (they were the same platform and basically the same car underneath with different fascia), I would wholeheartedly recommend them an could give you lots of info for it (service manuals, etc).
I imagine that one would be fine
if generally cared for well enough. Check for rust though if you’re in an area where salty roads exist - pre-MC generation Accents rusted a bit.

It would be a 1.5L - the Accent didn’t get a 1.6L until 2005, which would be the G4ED Alpha II, which was a significantly updated version of the 1.5L. The 1.6 is a good motor, I have it in my 2009 Accent. Can’t speak to the 1.5L though as I’ve never had any experience with it. The MC generation (‘06-’10) Accents used the G4ED Alpha II, as did the JB generation Kia Rio (2005-2011).

I did. Had to replace the clutch AND gearbox at 88k.
My stepdad bought it from me at 150k, ran it for another 50k over a few years, then bought an '05 with the 1.6. That one has been much better. It also led to them buying an '18 Elantra SE to replace their totaled Explorer.

What’s wrong with the 1.5? Is it just power, or mechanical issues?

I’ll ask where the two previous owners lived , but I’d imagine it’s at least been in the South all it’s life.

I’d have to find one, don’t seem to be too many manual corollas for sale, and I’m not sure I’d trust an old autobox, although I may have to.

The engine itself was ok mostly, but the transmission and clutch were fragile. I lost first gear and the clutch at the same time. I don’t really know what caused it.
I did learn you need to use OEM sensors. I tried an aftermarket MAF sensor and it failed in one day.

Very interesting, I’ll look into it. This one’s at 118k on the orginal clutch and trans, maybe it’s an exception or was just driven really carefully?
Anyways, I’ll do some research on it.

I bought mine in ‘05 with 39k on the clock. It was a repo, so it’s possible the first owner didn’t maintain it well or didn’t know how to shift properly. Right after I bought it I became a courier and put 50k more on it in short order, less than a year in fact.

My 2004 3dr hatch had the 1.6, so I’m thinking that the engine came with the body change. I loved the snot out of that car.

Could be, my grasp of Accent info other than the MC generation is far more tenuous! :)

One could suggest that the original clutch is a good thing as it indicates that it was owned by someone that actually could drive a stick. My wife drove her Civic Si original clutch 200,000 miles and it worked as good as new the day she sold it.
Buy based on the owner. Is it well maintained. Does it have good, matching tires. Has the oil been changed , + bo nus points for synthetic..... Thats what you want.
One last point. If the car is in hilly country, clutches will wear. If it is in flat land. A well driven clutch will last a long time.
