!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Seems like I’m gonna need a cheap DD in the next couple months and i find myself attracted to x and s type jags, I know some parts are ford stuff so does that make them any more reliable? This one is a stick even! Any OPPOs with x type experience?

FWIW a manual X-Type isn’t going to be any more or less reliable than an E46.

They are great to drive , when sorted. But they have a lot of plastic parts that fail, blend door, trim, seat motors.
The 02s are all all-wheel-drive, and the early cars are like mountain goats. Changing the transfer case oil is a bear of a job, as are the front struts.
Water pumps go (again plastic) and window regulators are fragile (yet more plastic).
The manual is the one to have - don’t buy an early automatic without verifying the transmission has been replaced.
A/C needs to work or else the car will fog up (it’s so tightly sealed you need to run the A/C to keep the windows clear).
Most fixes are cheap (and parts from the UK save a lot as well), but can require a fair bit of your time and some expertise. It’s fine if you can swing a wrench, but if you usually have a shop do your work it is a terrible financial decision.
I t was wonderful, but it was occasionally a headache when waiting on a part or trying to get it repaired when the weather sucked . If I had to do it over again, I’d spend the extra few bucks and look at an XJ8/XJR of similar vintage. The bigger cars have better components and are less complex to work on (the access is better on the bigger cars) .
AMA if you think of anything else, but the tl;dr is buy an XJ or XK something (or grab an early XF)
.

You could probably find a manual G35 for just a little bit more and it will be infinitely (heh) more reliable. Just have to make sure it doesn’t burn too much oil.

I put 230,000 miles on an 02 Jag X-Type, it is getting it’s Viking Funeral in the 24 hours of Lemons in December, it was a great car, The Cooling system
needs to be monitored very closely, and the AC is a must, Oil changes need to be frequent. brakes are cheap and easily available, engine parts need to be ordered. There is a great forum out there
for the X-Type. I really liked mine and could’nt
bring
myself to crush with out racing glory.

I’m decently handy and used to work for Mazda so I’m somewhat familiar with the mazda6 version of the duratec, if it’s not too different the water pump should be easy, it was right up top iirc. Good to know what to look out for though, manuals are hard to find though, and early models are about it in my potential budget so I may end up with an early automatic anyways. I’d love an xj6 but older and britisher worries me, at least I’m vaguely familiar with fords via Mazda. And the four headlights are a must, none of that nineties rectangle headlight crap.

Yeah, Infiniti just doesn’t do it for me really, I really should get a civic or something but if I’m gonna make a bad decision then I want a jag lol.

That’s awesome, glad to hear it. I was a Mazda tech so I’m somewhat familiar with the duratec v6 but dunno how much jag changed for it. Nice to know there’s forums out there though.

Is that good or bad.... I would think it would be a little better mechanically due to ford engine but worse electrically due to jag.

Find me a half decent one for a couple grand a month or two from now and I’ll do it. I’d love even an xj6 but older jag reliability is scary and this will be my dd at least for a year or so. Plus I’m semi familiar with duratecs from my time at Mazda and AWD would be nice too, even better with a stick.

Yeah. I just think older jags are the perfect classy, especially in brg or black. It’s a bad decision but I was a mechanic for a couple years so I’m not completely inept and the want is strong. I’ve always thought of myself as an import guy and never been one for euro (except my Saab 9000) but between my desire for a jag and talking to my wife about my attainable dream car list I realized they’re all British and was honestly surprised to learn that about myself. (3 wheeler, evora, caterham and f type if you’re curious)

Fair enough. I don’t think that the Jag would be too bad, but I know that G35s are generally rock solid. I would definitely take an X type over the equivalent Audi or BMW if I was worried about reliability though.
Just remember to budget some money for unexpected repairs, especially if you aren’t doing the work yourself.

welp... if you can do the work yourself it becomes more affordable (parts mark up aside)
its mostly the lectrics that go wrong... and those are a nightmare
and good choices on the dream list

just to clarify.. by lectrics i mean any part that isnt purely mechanical... wich is.. well.. a lot of parts that could go wrong

Yep it is a duratec with some Jaguar specific differences, but most parts swap over and are in the same location . The full Jaguar service manual for those years is out on the internet (google JTIS) , and the forums are excellent sources of info for quick/cheap fixes, equivalent Ford/Mazda part numbers and diagnostics .
The rebuilt autos are prominently stickered (it is a relatively large JATCO sticker you can see with the hood open)
. It’s hard to miss.
The later XJ8s/XJRs are cheap, and after ‘01 (double check that on Google)
don’t have the timing chain issues of the 98-01 cars
. I see them a lot in the same price range as X-Types, and they’re in better shape typically.
The ‘04 on
XJ
cars have air suspension issues but are good cars otherwise
. If you can stretch your budget a bit, the XF is substantially better, and they are often right around 10K for ‘09/’10 cars
(at least where I am).
