Right, then...
So, I have a nibble on the Volvo, and I think she wants to take it for a pre-buy inspection, which I’m fine with. However, I’ve never done this...how does it work? Does the potential buyer put down a deposit or something then takes the car while I hold the title? Do I go with? How long does a prebuy take?
Thankx.

Your call, but were it mine I'd bring it to the shop of their choosing, they pay for the inspection, we both get a copy. If it sells, great. If not, "recently inspected" gets added to the ad.

This is how I've seen it being done. I/we were always the buyers.

When I bought my Volvo, the seller brought it to the shop I requested (only a few blocks from where the car was). The shop called me and read off the results of the inspection, and took my payment over the phone.

A little bit of effort to coordinate between the three parties, but worked out ok in the end.

This is what we did when we sold our Westy . The local v w shop did the inspection. Buyer paid the bill. At first the shop didn’t want to give me the results- but the buyer insisted and they did.

When I was shopping for my STi as a buyer of course, I had two inspections done on cars before buying one of them. In both cases the owner of the car brought the car to a shop and I paid the shops directly for the cost of the inspection over the phone. It probably is best for the buyer to choose the shop but i wanted to make it convenient and just let the seller choose. They seemed like trustworthy sellers so I wasn’t too worried. Funny that the first car with major issues ended up being at a shop where the owner had been there regularly. So it was clear the owner had caused the issues since those weren’t reported earlier. I now swear by inspections 100%. It is usually less than $100 and is the best insurance I can imagine.
In both cases I told the seller I’m 100% going to buy if the inspection comes back clean and here is my initial offer. As long as that was agreed, it goes pretty straight forward. Of course if crap would come up after, renegotiation would be required. Nothing at all new came up wrong with the second car so I bought it at the previously agreed upon price. I’m very happy with how that turned out since in 10k miles and about 10 months now I’ve had almost zero issues at 147k miles on the odo . I’ve done two oil changes, changed brake pads and rotors, replaced a starter and intercooler hoses, and new tires right when I got it which are nearing their end (200tw summers don’t last long).

Another +1 for the “you take it to their shop of choice and they pay” idea. I did this from the buyer side for my Outback XT since it was located ~5 hours away
. After arranging it with the seller, I called the shop to pay with credit card and they called back with the results. Easy as that.
