Kinja'd!!!

Apparently the trailer decided to go tree hunting on its own while being towed down the highway

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

No info on the tow vehicle, or HOW it became detached, but I’m sure someone’s ass is in a wringer over it.

It’s truly amazing that absolutely zero qualifications other than a driver’s license  are required to legally tow in the U.S.

Or that anyone can go and buy 400+ HP and 3,000+ pounds of land-based unguided missile without needing to take any actual training classes on how to drive said weapon of modest destruction.

Graduated licensing with specific endorsements with required training for varying levels of vehicle power and towing capacity are sorely needed. But implementing such things would impinge upon peoples’ ‘free-dumbs’, so we can’t that.

This is why we can’t have nice things.

I saw a guy towing a tractor on a trailer, he came to a stop at the red light. Noticed his chains were just dragging on the pavement, so I stopped and told him after I completed my turn. He just looked at me like whatever asshole and then ran the red.

I never saw that movie, but I’ll say, “What acting! What costuming! What hair styling! "

Can confirm. Once had a trailer fall of when I was working as a hardwood flooring installer. We were on a dirt road and the trailer fell of the hitch over some bumps. It sounded like the transmission has grenaded itself with the trailer dragging on the dirt road took us a half mile or so to realize what happened. Thankfully the chains were in place and trailer didn’t “send it” off any sick jumps

This car was either this guy’s baby, and he’s completely torn up about it, or he’s so rich that this is just another one of his million-dollar toys (“ nothing special” ), and he was just like ¯\_()_/¯ when it happened.

I’d wager the latter.

The European regs don’t have much to restrict power once you have a Class B license , but towing, vehicle mass, and maximum passengers are restricted (3500 kg maximum GVWR (using the American term for it here) for the vehicle, 750 kg maximum GVWR for the trailer, unless the GCWR is below 3500 kg, then the trailer can be more than 750 kg, and 9 seats maximum) at least. (If you want to tow heavier trailers, you have to get a BE license, basically a trailer endorsement, if you want to drive heavier vehicles, you have to upgrade to a C1(E) (7500 kg max GVWR) or C(E) (unlimited GVWR) license , and if you want to carry more passengers, you have to upgrade to a D1(E) (17 seats) or D(E) (unlimited seats) license .)

Below that, you have B1 for heavy quadricycles (15 kW, 450 kg empty for cars, 600 kg empty for trucks, not including batteries), and AM (which is a motorcycle class, but I’ll get to it) for light quadricycles (425 kg empty not including batteries, 50 cc spark ignition or 4 kW for all other power sources max) .

Note that I’ve been calling for a CDL for anything over 8500 lbs GVWR in the US for quite a while - Europe basically already has this (although 3500 kg is a bit lighter), with the C licenses basically being their equivalent of a CDL .

The motorcycle classes are better graduated, though - you have AM (45 km/h, 50 cc for spark ignition, 4 kW max, and is granted as part of a B1 or B(E) license), A1 (125 cc max, 11 kW motorcycles/15 kW tricycles max), A2 (35 kW max, 0.2 kW/kg max, and if the model is derived from detuning something more powerful, must be at least half of the original power), and A (all motorcycles).

P utting on the safety chains correctly and having your trailer brakes set up right seems like pretty cheap insurance. But what do I know?

Either a tragedy, or the most proficient “make it look like an accident” ever.

Just a thought, but if they hired a company to tow a vehicle worth over $1 million, they were likely qualified and heavily insured. However, I don’t see DOT numbers on the side of the trailer, so who knows.

a number of years ago, a trailer hauling a vintage Ferrari to the Colorado Grand tried to make a sharp turn at the bottom of a mountain and suffered a similar fate. unfortunately, i’m old and that was before the internet had pictures of everything that ever happened.
