Pistons aren’t always supposed to be round, right? RIGHT?
Sobs
There’s more, but Imma half-ass this back together and go drink myself stupid.
See you tomorrow, Oppo.

Nah. Round is overrated.

Aren’t these supposed to be basically indestructible ? O_o

Piston ring end gap issues?

I know, right?

I mean in a way it’s better than a cracked block. But not really by much.

I’d probably pop that piston out, do a dingle ball hone, throw in a good used piston and roll.

It’s fine, you can’t see it once it’s together.

Preignition. Take oil pan off, cut the ridge, push piston out, install a new piston and rings, hone the bore and re-install. + Fix whatever problem caused it to fail. I’ve done that fix before and as long as the bearings look decent. It will work.

Stop leak plugged the coolant passage around the back of the head , creating a hot spot. I’ve been trying to find a good used engine to toss in, but it doesn’t seem like many ‘90's 4-banger Je eps (or Dakotas) got sold in Alberta, cause there be none now. This one seemed to run okay if a bit shaky, at least until it got hot.
hot because zero coolant because of a radiator so crusty you can almost push fingers through it, which evidentally someone attempted to fix by dumping in tons of stop leak.

So it sounds like you need a radiator too....
Since y ou already have the head off, if you can get the oil pan off and get to the bottom of the rod, the repair is surprisingly cheap and easy . A piston is about $50 with rings (my guess) and maybe $ 20 to get a mechanic to press it on. You need another $40 for a ring compressor and a hone and you are done.
If the bearings look horrible, replace them too in place. But if they are smooth, use them as is. Just make sure you keep track of everything’s orientation and where everything fits and you will be fine. I once pulled and repaired a piston on my race car while on the trailer. It’s a heck of a lot easier than pulling a motor.....
People tend to be perfectionists on the stuff which in my opinion has a lot more to do with their insecurities about understanding what is wrong and fixing it. My thought is fix the absolute minimum, limiting it to things that are really broken, This fix will not be by the book, but I bet it will work

I’ve already replaced most of the cooling system. Had it ordered up before I even got the truck home. That’s when I discovered that when it actually had coolant in it, the oil turned into a pretty serious milkshake pretty damn fast.
I’m in school about 350 miles away from the Jeep now with very limited time to work on the weekends (due to 700 miles of driving). If I was to rebuild, I’d be pulling the engine anyway to do the whole thing. I’d prefer an unknown engine that I know runs to one that is pretty well unknown and has definitely been repeatedly run way hot. This wasn't the only cylinder with compression problems, either, with 65, 90, 100, 25 psi... This was the 25 psi. #1 didn't seem to have gasket or any other obvious problems, either. Possibly a valve seat issue, but it's tough to say by eyeball. Either way this engine for sure has more problems than just the one piston.

gotcha. the above post was the only one I saw till this AM. Goodluck and let us know how it worked out.

Just goes to show, Stop Leak can destroy any engine.
