It’s not the color. It’s not the cheapness. It’s not the terrible transmission. It’s the fact that there are three ways to adjust the volume and NONE OF THEM ARE A DAMN KNOB .

First you have the perfectly flat capacative buttons under the screen.

Then there’s the clicky buttons on the steering wheel.

Kinja'd!!!

Neither of these are conducive to “cranking it”. Fortunately, whenever you use either of the above options, this slider pops up on the touchscreen:

Kinja'd!!!

So you CAN crank it, it’s just a two step process.

Oh, did I mention the volume resets itself to a barely audible whisper whenever the car is turned on?

that sounds like an awesome feature. I always leave the volume on my wifes car cranked and then she yells at me about my hearing when she next drives it.

We use Google play music via bluetooth, but obviously when I am in the car it doesn’t connect to my phone. So it defaults to the last used function which is always traffic radio.

So she ends up with “TRAFFIC IS HEAVY ON HIGHWAY 1!” at over 100 db

Whoa, another Spark driver?! EV too?

I like the buttons behind the steering wheel, but agreed that a knob would’ve been nice. Also that screen can be really laggy and take lots of pressing to make things happen sometimes.

In general I can’t complain, its cheap as hell to own/run and a great commuter. We’ve grown pretty fond of ours.

I have slightly related story.

Couple of years ago we had a fuel related field test at work. We had a four identical Golf Mk VIIs and we drove 20,000 km with each. My share was 12,000 km or so. At t hat point I had a Nokia E7 phone and I listened quite a lot of Daft Punk from it through Bluetooth connection .

For some reason the audio system raised the volume by one notch after each song. So quite often I had to turn down the volume using the volume knob.   The knob went several revolutions counterclockwise during long trips to keep the music volume sensible.

And this seemed to happen only with Golf MkVIIs and E7s (which are pretty much extinct now) .

Fully agree about the need for tactile, manual interfaces in a setting where the design intention is that you’ll be looking at something else (the road) while operating them. Also you can’t CRANK a button. Or, you can only do it once.

How’s this for a bad feature then: the screen brightness can’t be controlled independently. It’s tied to the panel brightness.

I did some exploring and actually found a setting where you can control what volume number it resets to.

It’s funny because in 1958 the big three each only had one actual model  and just gave it different names

But, you could choose from 3-4 different engines (2 or 3 of which were V8s), 2 or 3 transmissions, 6 or 7 body styles, 2 wheelbases , 20 exterior colors (plus two tone combinations), 20 interior colors in 2 or 3 materials (plus two tone and three tone combinations) and every single option and accessory could be ordered a la carte. And, inflation adjusted, all that was no more than a typical compact or lower end midsize goes for today.
