Unfortunately, the author of the article doesn’t know the difference between a helicopter and an autogyro (or gyrocopter or gyroplane, depending on who you’re talking to). An autogyro (great name in this context) depends on forward movement to generate lift, a propeller to generate forward thrust, and a rudder t o control yaw. Pitch and roll are controlled by movement of the rotor head.
In this case, the truck was providing the thrust, but they didn’t have enough rudder authority
to give them control over the Robin. The rudder was too close to the body to get airflow.
I would rate this an interesting idea, poorly executed.
