I’ve probably replied humorlessly once or twice when I should have been laughing... but I know what you mean about commenters coming back at you.
I think your comment is funny. Clarkson would probably find it funny, Hammond and May would likely find it self-evident and fundamental.
I had a comment blow-back a couple weeks back... tried to reference the “smug” episode of South Park about hybrid and electric car drivers generally tending to be activists more than automotive enthusiasts.
WOW were the responses humorless and intolerant, from a group of people that usually tend to tout tolerance, and shrug off sharp comments they make about people they disagree with as merely rhetorical, and made in jest.

I once made a joke about how hard plastic interiors in family vehicles are a feature if your kid pukes all over it and someone got mad. I had to point out it was a joke.
