I was going there to have some tires mounted. The store was always empty, but the tire center was always busy, guess it wasn’t enough to keep everything else afloat. Went to Discount Tire across the road instead. And the tech didn’t wipe the rims off before putting the wheel weights on, so they were falling off by the next day...
I noticed when I went under the car to adjust the drum brakes, so the parking brake would hold for inspection. Took it back in today and they re-balanced the wheels and stuck the weights on properly this time (really who F’s something this simple up? I’m sure your coworkers love having to shoe somebody in because you “saved” three seconds cutting the dumbest corner). Buuut it was too late to get in line for inspection by the time I got to the shop. 9 _ 9

Sears went bankrupt. Sucks for any employees that were expecting a pension.

They have not yet. But they probably will soon. They closed a large number of stores in the past couple of months.

Actually when companies go bankrupt, there’s a federal pension plan that the bankruptcy court requires the company to pay into. Idk if it’s more or less than what they were normally going to get, but it’s something.
This is also why defined benefit plans are terrifying to rely on.

The M. Night Shyamalan twist is that the store closed 5 years ago, they just never told the people in the tire shop.

What employee of Sears could expect a pension? I would think it would be a very slim minority.

It’s less. Usually a lot less. Depends on the plan but around 50 cents on the dollar used to be fairly common.

I used to shop Sears for Craftsman tools, but they sold that line of tools and I see them other places, so I have zero reason to return. I can’t believe Sears is still around.

My grandmother, but she retired from there in the 80's when they were still afloat, and passed before Sears did. Considering how long they had existed I imagine she felt fairly confident they’d be around a while, but I know exactly what you mean. Anyone who’s stepped foot in a Sears in the past 20 years could see this coming from a distance, especially if they had gotten to experience the joys of the Tool/Home and Garden department of yesteryear. (Though their clothing never fell within the realms of “cool” in my lifetime, which was a problem as it turns out.)
I knew for sure they were done for when they didn’t have any 10mm sockets on the shelves. Roughly 5 years before they finally folded.
Damn travesty.

I actually detest discount tire. I’ve tried 2 now. First one wouldn’t up size my tires (width) because “the computer says you cant do that on a Crossfire”. Second one wouldn’t plug a nail hole because my tires were at 4/32s. It was like a month before I put my winter tires on.
“You have to buy new ones”, yea I will next spring.

From what I’ve read, it is supposed to be paying full benefits up to a limit of around $60k per year, though the information is a bit confusing, so I’m not super confident of that.
Regardless, it does sound like there’s a looming disaster because the multi-employer charge a premium that are a 5th of that charged by single employer plans, and it is completely inadequate, and rapidly running down PDGC’s reserves. Everyone seems to agree that the premiums (which are set by Congress) need to be increased, but it seems like Congress’ preferred solution is just to slash the guaranteed benefits.
In any event, I know a lot of people consider 401K s and the like plots to screw over workers, but I certainly feel like while you can quibble about contribution amounts, defined contribution plans are way better for employees when compared to defined benefit plans.

I’ve only been once, but quick was not my experience. They told me 45 minutes and then kept me there for over 3 hours to get a pair of new tires put on.

It’s a shame. Craftsman tools are now available at True Value Harward and Orchard Supply Hardware, but for a single hand tool, I am just as likely to shop on Amazon.
