The time to replace the missus’ car is coming upon us soon than we had hoped. So I’ve been looking at a few replacement options.
The greater the search radius the more options, obviously. But the prospect of finding the unicorn increases. I have found two !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! within budget/year/miles.
The want is strong. It even has a rear facing jump seat!
They are only 1500 miles away......at least.
I’ve found a new Mazda 6 at a local dealership which would probably work just fine. I’ve begun cruising Carmax. They can deal with the shipping.
How far you would go for a DD/non-rare vehicle?

Max 300ish miles/5-6 hours drive, but it has to be a killer deal. I drove 2 hours to get my current car.
On a related note, The E400 Wagon is on my next vehicle list a few years down the line. Only wish they made an E43 version.

I bought my 335xi from a guy in San Diego and had it shipped to Madison, WI because it was the only stick shift E92 LCI 335xi M Sport coupe in LeMans blue with oyster leather and aluminium trim for sale in the whole country at the time. I didn't go to San Diego, I just went off pictures, Carfax and a PPI at a local BMW dealer that the seller and I split the cost of.

I bought my new truck 700 miles away. I flew out , did the paper work and drove it home. It was a great way to get to know a new vehicle, and I’d do it again without hesitation.

I live near the main Manheim auction house, so I’ve had dealers ship me cars from all over relatively cheaply (since they had cars going there anyway). At worst, you’re looking at $1500 to ship across the country. Or just get a plane ticket and drive back (did that a couple of times, too).
This is for a rare car or color combo. For just “a car”, then I’d say 5 hours each way.
EDT: we could do an awesome Oppo post and have a bunch of us tag-team the car from one end of the country to the other for you ;)

Needed urgently, like within the next couple days? 1,000 miles.
Patient searching (months/years), I try to stick to local things because good stuff eventually crops up if you’re near a population center.
That Merc wagon is pretty sweet, the want is strong here. But every time I look at one and crunch the numbers, the GL-class SUV wins out. Basically the same price for a lot more space, 100x more inventory, and not-much-different fuel economy. But I still like the wagon.

For a daily ive only gone as far as the next big town over bout an hour and a half drive . It happened to be the cheapest clean titled car of that model in the country with most of the options i wanted.
For something rare though, i had it shipped 1100 miles. It was as much as a flight/hotel or multi hotel stay anyhow

When you said unicorn I just figured you had to mean the AMG version. In this case I have to say the proper response is just buy a Buick already. A version of this same game plays out in Europe over our cars too. Where E series estates are beyond common.

My current DD is from NM, and I live in CA. It was advertised as CPO, which provided some peace of mind, and ITA97 also stopped by to make sure it wasn’t a basket case.
JLR’s CPO program is unnervingly lacking in detail, though. I had to ask a bunch of questions to get the records that I wanted to see.
Got my weekend car from Kansas.

They aren’t super common in the US. Even less within my mileage/price/age bracket. The AMG is incredibly rare in the US. I like the new Buick/Opel wagon they just brought over but I don’t think any examples will be on the used market just yet.

I like that idea. An Oppo cross country road trip.

you’d be surprised how quickly you can get a used recently released model. I’ve already been seeing new model Equinox and Camaro’s at my Chevy account. It’s a large volume dealer so most new models start showing up used within a few months...most likely from GM’s own inventory of executive loaners. They had 2 used Colorado’s within a month of release.
I’d also be more apt to buy the new Buick over the used MB...especially if you aren’t close to a dealer or specialty mechanic familiar with the product and with an inventory of the required special tools that Z Germans love so much .
I like the Signature edition Mazda 6 a bunch, too bad no long roof. Doesn’t Buick have a “signature” type trim now too?

There was a point a few years back where I knew every owner of the AMG wagon variant in the US.
Not sure why I thought Buick had returned to making station wagons for a year or more. Guessing a first gen Panamera would still be too spendy or costly. Really that only leaves a V90 as alternative.

I’d go about an hour but my most expensive car was $5500.
As for Mazda 6s my soon to be step brother in law has one and it’s been a constant problem from the first month he bought it. He has a 2016 and it’s a nightmare it’s stranded him several times already and keeps needing expensive repairs to non maintenance items.

I really wish they made an E53 lol, that sweet new straight six sounds delightful. Not that I could afford it or anything.

I wouldn’t call an E wagon non-rare. But that’s just me. So I’d go whatever distance and enjoy the drive back.
Side note, 212's are the dopest. I’d go for the black one because I like the looks of those lights better. But I didn't look at mileage or anything. Really just make sure they have good service history and you should be safe. And I mean all services, including brake fluid and trans fluid.
