I’m guessing most of you will have read this:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

‘ It’s not hard to find one running and in decent shape for a couple grand.”

Apparently ‘decent shape’ means something different now , as the market has risen on these cars. I found mine for 4 grand a few years ago, and while it was cosmetically mostly there, it’s needed enough stuff to get it running right (and still needs more to be ‘perfect’) that I’d hardly call it a budget friendly beater. Now I’m seeing NA Autos for 7 grand on my local craigslist.

“ Even then, though, you’ll have a car that’s too big to be a real sports car, too small to be as practical as a family car, and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , which I would.”

I’m going to go ahead and disagree with almost all of this. I’d call the Mk3 Supra more a grand tourer than a pure sports car, as even in 1987 the car had electronically adjustable suspension, cruise, power adjustable lumbar, bolsters, and power seats, power mirrors, headlight sprayers, and ample trunk space. The wife and I took mine to Las Vegas from Minneapolis and had plenty of room for clothes, two spares, enough tools to take the car apart (I’m the paranoid type when I pack for a long trip), and everything else we needed/wanted for comfort/convenience and had room to spare. The head gasket is a known issue, and honestly an easy fix. a MHG with ARP studs/bolts, torqued correctly, and you’re set.

“ But I still can’t help but think that a MkIII Supra is the disposable, fuck-withable car that I could really use and beat the hell out of.”

The NA ones, sure. But as I said, the market is rising on these things, and the turbo cars are growing in price and desirability.

At the end of the day, I’d rather see a MK3 go to someone who likes the cars, not someone who sees it as an appliance. It seems like it’s not the car for Raph. Yes, I’m biased.

Mine for your troubles:

That looks odd for a Supra.

The Mass Air Flow sensor went on my ‘89 and being ceramic cost north of $1000. Except one little problem: you cannot find a replacement part anywhere in the world. I ended up installing an oversized Lexus MAF and a fuel computer. That made me sell the car, if you can’t get parts you’re fucked.

I just sold mine :( for cheap. M arket is exploding on the mk3. I remember picking up near mint turbo cars for 3 grand. Last one I looked at was almost 15 grand. ouch. And c ertain parts are getting harder to find. Mine sat for 6 months as I looked and failed for a good crankshaft. A 1jz/2jz swap was out of budget for me. Those engines are getting quite expensiv e. 1gg was harder to locate. in the end I decided to move on. I miss the car a lot... w58 is the best shifting transmission ever. and the car was sooooo comfortable on long trips. great gt car, reminded me of a well sorted xjs. maybe I will come across a 1j swapped one in the future. that isn’t white ;) for some reason they are all white.

Every single person I met, while I had a 7m , had spun a rod at one point, even the guy who didn’t joined the club a week after. I ultimately joined as well , but in defense that was more self inflicted.

H aving to check the oil pickup height is just silly, the crush bent cross over tube is bad design, the piston coolers potentially killing the motor is irritating , some of the heads being so soft that you needed special oversized or reinforced washers to hold the additional clamp force from the studs . Crossover intakes make service irritating as well.   The R154 isn’t really up there as a great transmission either. The engine when it runs and makes power is a beautiful thing, but at 3400lbs it isn’t exactly a great ratio, like a DC5 integra does better in power to weight.

Beauty of a car. Wish I had one to share... it is on my short list of considerations.

One of the several reasons I sold my 92 Subaru  SVX “project” car... too hard to support while trying to support another daily driver... so the project gets sold to support the daily driver.

I forgot to put the caveat, but they almost epitomize the 80's. It does make me smile when I see them out and about. Fond memories as my first fast engine.

Know what you want. Do your research and know what you’re getting into. Those two things will keep you from whining about the decision you make . Don’t look back.

All the worry about BHGs is irrelevant. The issue has been known for decades and you are unlikely to run across a MKIII that hasn’t been fixed. If you’ve had more than one BHG, you haven’t done any research. I had mine fixed 15 years ago and never had a recurrence.

Any 30 year old car is expensive to own simply because parts are scarce. It’s even more expensive to restore one. This is not—and has never been—the car for high school hot rodders unless they are independently wealthy.

If a classic GT is something you want and you know what you’re getting into, if you find one running and in good shape for under $10K, buy it. Personally, I don’t think I’d take three times that for mine, but I’m the original owner, and have put 99.9 % of its 150,000 miles on it myself. She still turns heads and people in parking lots and on the road constantly ask if it’ s for sale. It’s not.

I’m not sure if you meant to reply to this post as it's from August, but you did catch that the pictures are of mine, right? I've owned it for a few years now, and road tripped it from the Twin Cities (MN) to Vegas and back.

You’re right on all counts. I meant to post this on Orlove’s page. Oh well, I’m over it. I found yours via a circuitous route from some research I was doing—starting from Supramania. If your not a Supramania member, you should check it out. Hard to believe I’ve been retired for almost 13 years. In the AF for 24, mostly B-52s.  I hope you enjoy your time in--it goes fast.
