Rusty bubble redux on muh 2 year old Mustang ¯\_()_/¯

I could really use a fiberglass hood right about now.

You can’t spell “rust” without “u”

My ST has peeling paint and my Dad’s 14 GT has bubbling.  We don’t live in a rust area....  Honestly, it is insane.

Taking a page out of Zoidberg’s book , you can’t spell rust without “ST”

Yep. Ford paint and rust proofing is awful. My FiST had rust in the door seals and they bounced me around from place to place before the dealer I traded in at took care of it before selling (allegedly)

I t could be worse. You could be driving this, in these conditions . I spent about 4 hrs with a wire wheel and spray paint on the door sills this season. The rear fenders are getting pretty beat, those will get done next year.

That’s pretty bad for such a new car. Shouldn’t everything be made with galvanized steel (unless it’s aluminum or whatever) these days?

I can’t believe Ford hasn’t sorted this out yet. I hear about this problem since the 2011 Mustang

Is the h ood steel on a mustang? That would surprise me.

It’s likely aluminum. And from what I understand, it’s difficult to get good paint adhesion on aluminum parts. That’s what this looks like.

This happened before, right? I wonder if the body shop didn’t prep the hood right prior to paint. Was it a new hood or did they strip and repaint the problem part?

If new,   I would be surprised if the new part was delivered to the shop as  bare metal. These are usually primed with e-coat from the factory before going into a box

If a respray, then... yeah. Try again?

Aluminum Hood it is. This is the same Hood the car came with. Spot repairs were done previously.

It’s actually been a problem since they switched to aluminum hoods and with the S197 Mustang in 2005...

Werd. Is the problem in the same location as before? If so, they need a better adhesion promoter. Tell them to use the good stuff this  time ;)

That doesn’t bode well for the new F-150s then. If they can’t figure out how to adhere paint to aluminum. Wow. The can’t believe you’re having that issue again. I wonder if it’s a supplier cleanliness issue, or just poor prep for paint. My nearly 10 year old aluminum bodied Audi shows no signs of failing adhesion, so it can be achieved, no excuses for that on a new car.

Aluminum still corrodes. It bubbles.

Some say it’s rail dust contaminantes. Others say poor prep. I’ve no idea.

Fine so far, although there are some odd corners in the seams where the car looks primer gray/green cause they didn’t *quite* get enough paint on. Al though I’m amazed that over a year in and the interior is still so quiet. Granted, I don’t plan on rallycrossing the FoST so that might’ve been self-inflicted but still.

Kinja'd!!! Gerry197 > K-Roll-PorscheTamer

Don’t think it’s rust, should be an aluminum hood, probably some bad prep & iron contamination leading to corrosion and paint blisters, which Ford was notorious on their aluminum hoods and lift-gates

Luckily they seemed to have fixed the issue with their all aluminum stuff, but still seem to be having issues with certain hoods and lift-gates as stand alone body parts.

Kinja'd!!! Gerry197 > merged-5876237249235911857-hrw8uc

Kinja'd!!!1

The new (since 2015) F150s seem to be holding up well so far. The issue was iron contamination on the aluminum hoods and tailgates for a lot of their cars.

They created a procedure for their all-aluminum vehicles (F150, Superduties & Expeditions/Navigators) to prevent this from happening.

However, some parts being painted in non-100% aluminum bodied factories are still having issues apparently.
