A few months ago I posted about a position in Shanghai with my company that I was making a run at. Well, it evaporated. It would have been a promotion. It has come back, but moved down a notch to my pay grade. I’m going to give it a shot. It’s a bit of a bummer that the immidate step up is gone, but I’m still game to give it a go. Fingers crossed. If I did get it there would need to be some crazy gyrations around the house, cars, kid’s schools and all that, but I think we could make it work.

Seems like a cool opportunity. Presumably your organization has plenty of experience resettling people so hopefully they could make the move smooth. If you end up doing it, I’d recommend trying to structure compensation so that you don’t get burnt if either the dollar or the yuan sees a significant shift.

So, other than a pay increase, which is no longer there, what’s attractive about the job that makes you want to up and move to Shanghai?
Unrelated, I have a friend who was stationed in Shanghai for a year by her company. Single mom with a daughter under 2 at the time. She loved it.

Pay would be in USD and the stipends for housing and other stuff are very robust. Should be pretty well protected there.

If they want you enough, you could negotiate a half step-up ... perhaps.

Glad to hear she enjoyed it. My reasons:
- it would be an adventure for the family. Could greatly broaden the horizons for our kids and their horizons are pretty broad already.
- I’ve been doing the engineering thing for 20 years. I’ve enjoyed it, but I have built up other skills as well. Maybe it’s a bit of a midlife crisis thing, but I would like to try some other stuff. Delta is big enough to allow me to do that without leaving the company.
- I have an interest in working on the partnerships with the other air carriers that were are affiliated with. There is huge potential there.
- I feel that I have skills and capabilities that can help them do what they are looking to do I genuinely think that can help them
- I like jumping off the high dive. This feels like that.

That is a thought. We have s9methun called a field director that is in between. We would need to talk about some of the key benefits to make it work.

That’s very cool. I envy you the (possible) opportunity and the guts to make that leap. Too many wait until it’s too late.

That’s something I did not think of ... if the new city costs more to live in, they should compensate you. Moved from DC (born there) to NYC in 2001. Cost of living about 15% higher, but you learn to live cheap, so I compensate. Also, no car, no car insurance, no gas ... etc. Had a car in DC.

These expat assignments have your typical salery, plus a substantial housing stipend, a transportation and communication stipend and they fully cover private school for the minions with no cost cap. The smartest thing would be to sell everything and basically live off the company, but we would want to keep the house and cars.
