How easy is it to gain German residency though? And there’s the difference in fuel costs and taxes and such...

The cost of living is cheaper in the U.K., less restrictive in many ways, more restrictive in a few.

Depends on where you’re from. As an EU citizen I can just move from one country to the next if I want to (and I have), no questions asked. As an American (/Canadian/Australian/whatever) it’s a bit harder. However, especially if you’re a student it shouldn’t be hard at all.
Taxes might be higher, but things like health care and education are way, way cheaper. I paid €120 here for a semester at the LMU university in Munich Germany, and I’m not German. Health insurance (with no real extra costs) is a set and mandatory percentage of your income in Germany. It all depends on what you prefer. The US is probably the better place to live in if you’re rich. If you’re middle class (or below), Western Europe is better. Very generally speaking.

Lol. Well I’ve been looking at houses.
There is a railway viaduct over the river at the front of the property, both steam and electric trains use it.

Rural but not completely is olated. Great transport links to the north, east and south.
Unlike Scotland, England doesn’t have a minimum price per unit of alcohol.
