Add my local mall to the list of places where a stick shift has foiled a car theft attempt

Perusing my local news this morning, I saw a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! about yet another attempted car theft thwarted by a stick shift car that the would-be thieves weren’t able to drive. Then I remembered there was just an !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! about a similar event. I decided to check and see if this was, in fact, the same event.

It was n’ t, because the FP post was in Nashville, not Maryland. Turns out, this one happened at the Montgomery Mall, right near me! This picture of a shoe was taken by me, IN MY STICK SHIFT CAR, IN THE MONTGOMERY MALL PARKING LOT .

I like sneakers. This sneaker is the Nike Air Max 270. Interstate 270 is the main highway running from the northwest of the DC beltway, up through Montgomery County, Maryland. Therefore, a couple months ago when I bought this pair of Air Max 270s, I deemed the Nike Air Max 270 the official sneaker of Montgomery County residents. I bought the Nike Air Max 270 at Montgomery Mall, which is right next to Interstate 270. SYNERGY.

Looks like we’re never going to take my wife’s car to the mall since if someone tries to jack me, my stick shift will save the day.

Not that we go to the mall a lot, of course. But I actually have been there one other time since buying those shoes, which was when my sister-in-law and her husband visited us over a long weekend, and we wanted to kill some time while it was raining. On that visit, I learned that mac ‘n cheese and microwave-in-a-cup muffins are now health food.

Fun fact, I go by that Kroger in Nashville on the way to my wife’s work all the time. There is a hill at the light just outside that makes driving a manual the absolute worst - but at least I feel good knowing my car won’t get jacked. Fortunately, she doesn’t go that way or even to that Kroger.

Oh, we bought a CX5 btw! Idr if I went back the post to tell you.

Why can’t nike make a good running shoe, and why can’t anyone else make a good looking running shoe? My Nike flyknits look and feel amazing...until I run in them or stand in one place for a long time. My Brooks G10 are amazing for running, but they are ugly.

I always see a sweet new pair Nikes and think “ yes, these will be the ones that are actually good for working out.” I get them, they aren’t good and they eventually become really expensive lawn cutting shoes.

Yeah, you mentioned you joined the CX-5 club, and that you went with the touring preferred like ours instead of grand touring.

Here’s a fun little Mazda annoyance: if you have an Android phone and want to use maps from it rather than the car’s maps, and you put the car stereo on bluetooth audio, no sound comes out of the car unless you’re also playing music. For whatever reason, the car doesn’t leave the audio streaming if there’s no music being played. The workaround is to tick the box in Google Maps or Waze settings to play the voice out of the phone’s speaker instead of over bluetooth.

On iOS, there’s actually a setting in Google Maps to play the navigation voice as a “phone call,” which works to make the voice come out of the car if you’re not playing music. But even though it’s part of Google Maps, you can’t do that on an Android phone.

That Android Auto update for the car can’t come soon enough.

Nike makes a bunch of cool shoes that suck for running, but they do also make good performance runners. You just have to know which ones are the ones actually intended for running. Depending on foot type, the Nike Structure, Pegasus, Odyssey, Vomero and Elite are all proper runners.

I have wide feet and low arches but go for the lighter stability runners rather than the full-on clompy stuff like say, a Brooks Beast. I cycle between the NB 860, Asics GT-2000, Brooks Adrenaline and Nike Structure series.

Right now my main pair is the Adrenaline GTS 18 but before that I had a pair of Structure 20 that were pretty good. The Structure series has sometimes been hit-or-miss though. The 20 (and 21 which has the same sole) are pretty good but when they wear out, the foam around the Zoom air bag in the forefoot degrades where you can kinda feel the bag as a lump in there, and the outer part of the heel gets smushy.

Dude, you’ve been at it long enough to know that they will throw a few grams of protein powder in ANYTHING and call it strong, fierce, muscle, beast, animal, power , etc.

Yea Nike does a bad job of defining “actual” runners. My latest pair “Epic React Flyknit”are men’s running shoes and it does appear that is what they are designed for. However, they are not supportive which is to be expected to some degree with knits, but even the sole is terrible. I wont use them unless it’s on a treadmill and I’m not going far.

I didn’t like the Structures that I ran for a few minutes in the store when I bought the Brooks. I’ve not tried any of the others you mentioned.

My brooks are spent so it’s time for a new pair anyway. I’ll try a bunch out this time.

Some ideas, assuming you don’t have wide-ass flippers like me.

Neutral, cushioned, relatively light weight: Adidas Supernova Boost, Asics Cumulus, Brooks Ghost, NB 890, Nike Pegasus, Saucony Ride

Stability, cushioned, relatively light weight: Adidas Solar Glide ST , Asics GT-2000, Brooks Adrenaline, N B 860, Nike Structure, Saucony Guide

Neutral, s uper cush: Adidas Ultra Boost, Asics Nimbus, Brooks Glycerin, NB 1080, Nike Vomero, Saucony Triumph

Super cush + some stability: Adidas Ultra Boost ST, Asics Kayano, Brooks Addiction, NB 1260, Saucony Hurricane

(The Nike Odyssey used to be in that last category but I checked out the latest version, and they took the name and put it on a totally different shoe now.)

That is interesting to know, but I’m with you - cannot wait to get apple play!

I took it home from the Mrs work yesterday. It’s quite pleasant on the interstate for longer than a test drive spin.
I’m very surprised by it’s size/lack of size. I thought going from the beetle to this our garage would feel cramped. However it’s perfect. It has small doors compared to the coupe doors on the beetle and the overall footprint is really perfect for our garage. The fiat is not cramped at all next to it.

I wear test for brooks so I do have a bias. But, for a basic (non gimmicky) neutral cushion shoe, go with the new ghost 11's. I’ve been running in these for a while and they are my favorite ghosts since the 6's. They also introduced a basic basic neutral cushion called the Revel. I think they are onto the 2's but the originals were really nice. I didn’t think they looked too bad either. I like Saucony rides too, but they have less of a heal to toe drop compared to the Brooks (which I like) but you would want to rotate these in to get your body and muscles used to a lower drop.

I’ve got Ghost 10's, they’re spent but they have treated me well and you’re right that they don’t look “bad”. I guess it’s just that the Nike’s always look awesome. I will likely go for the Ghost 11's as I tried the comparable Asics, Addidas, and Nikes when I bought the last pair of brooks and the brooks were much more comfortable and supportive.

They don’t look terrible, but I’m not going to wear them to any social event. Most Nikes are acceptable but only work as athleisure wear. They best mix I’ve found were the Revels but even then, you can tell they are a running shoe first. I want to make dress looking shoes that you can wear with a suit but could also run a 5k in if you needed to. That would be amazing haha
