This is the evaporator pressure regulator from my Cressida. I am told it has failed, which is why my a/c does not work. I am skeptical of this diagnosis because of reasons that come from the depths of Toyota forums.

A guy who is parting out a Cressida is sending me this. I am not even sure this is the right part, but willing to risk $20.

Let me know if you have expertise in 1984 Toyota a/c systems.

Looks an awful lot like somebody already replaced it, and it apparently  wasn’t the cause.

Looks cleaner than the rest of the surrounding parts.

Let’s start at the basics. When you turn on the A/C does the compressor cycle? If not, check if the system is holding a charge. If so:

Does it rapidly cycle on and off or does it turn on for a while (perhaps compare it to another car with working a/c)? If it’s rapidly cycling, check if the system is holding a charge. If it’s turning on and staying on:

Is the hose between the evaporator (in the heater box) and the compressor (this would be the line from firewall to compressor, basically - the suction line) cool or cold? If not - put gauges on the system to continue diagnosis; if it’s cool:

Is the air from the vents cool/cold? If so, no problem. If not, look into blend door or other air door or heater valves which may be stuck in the ‘hot’ position.

-in 1960s instructor voice- The only way to reliably diagnose an a.c. system problem is with  a pr essure gauge hooked up to the hi and low pressure sides. The way the pressure cycles combined with its performance and a physical inspection (feel the lines for unusual tempurature) will lead to an accurate diagnosis.

Otherwise it is shotgunning parts on a system that works using voodoo. I’d suggest taking it to an a.c. shop for diagnosis.

Use your hands. Is the evaporator pressure regulator cold? Is the gas going to the compressor cold? If yes and its frosting or darn close , then the system is doing it’s job and something else like a faulty temp damper door control is the problem. If the compressor is running and the suction is not frosting , then it sounds like the control.

Ps, I assume they confirmed charge. There are two tire valve like charging valves. Push one when not running and you should see about 100 psi or more. Like an over inflated tire. But I assume they confirmed charge.

silly idea, have you tried a Toyota dealer to see if still available?
