I think I’m going to have to take a weekend trip up there at some point.

Totally worth the free admission. I would give it 3 hours easy. There are so many interesting stories around each display.

Plan on spending the whole day there. I live in Dayton and have visited countless times. I can still easily use up several hours per visit.

I think seeing Bockscar there was the weirdest/most harrowing thing for me . It’s weird seeing a plane involved in dropping a nuke on a populated area just sitting on display like it’s any other plane in the museum.

I like this, as if it was needing pointing out that these are period weapons from China/Russia. Also the AK-47 is fun to shot.

I’ve seen Bockscar as well as Enola Gay at the Udvar-Hazy Center near DC. They had to put up extra glass around   Enola Gay because somebody threw blood on her.

Yeah, if one starts thinking too much about the morality of at all in a museum for war machines, you can’t enjoy it. God knows how many people all of those aircraft in the museum have killed.

My son and I went last summer. We got there when the doors opened and they pushed us out as they locked the doors. You could easily spend two or three days there. The new 4th hangar is incredible. Here is a link to my photos from our visit.

There is a true difficulty in trying to admire the technological advances while reconciling the fact that all of these advances were made in the name of killing more people with greater efficiency. I’m going to do a post along those lines soon.

More art than motorcycle, and not very good art at that. Those guys just kept building the same bike over and over and over again.

That’s sadly true.  I think part of me tries to pretend that a lot of them were just minor duty or even built from spares.  But even then, a full use F-16 probably hasn’t come close to the kill count of that single B-29.  I didn’t realize it was there until I saw it.  Felt like I needed to just take a seat to reflect for a bit.  Granted my friends didn’t seem at all fazed by it, so maybe I’m just overly sentimental about it.

I do recall watching the show, and step 1 of all the custom bikes was to pull a standard frame off their shelf.

I wondered if Enola Gay was around somewhere as well.

And kind of a random but related question,  do you know if they had to clean off these aircraft after this missions to get of radioactive material?

I have no idea. The bombers did not fly alone. Two other B-29s accompanied them, one to take pictures and the other to take measurements (one of them, which went along on both missions, was named Great Artiste. Great Artiste crashed in 1949 and was scrapped ) . I imagine they knew how much radioactivity they had picked up, but I’m not sure that they would have cared all that much. Later, t he US sent soldiers into atomic zones after tests, and flew airplanes through mushroom clouds just to see what would happen. But that would be a fascinating question for the Smithsonian, and I bet they would be glad to answer it.

Awesome...I’ve seen most of these over the years, but a handful — the XB-70, B-36, B-58 — are extremely rare.

That particular AC-130 gunship (Azrael) was one of the last scale models I ever built about 25 years ago.

IIRC, Enola Gay is up about 15' on a big lift, too. I was pretty sure it was a vandalism deterrent.

One of the only aircraft that ever made me cry actual tears at the thought of what it was.

Definitely take a whole day. Within just a few miles of the museum you can also visit the Huffman Prarie flying field, and the hill where the Wright brothers tested their gliders.

As a bonus, if you look around the area where they tested the gliders you can see several small burial mounds built by the Adena Indians.

I have wrestled with this, as well, but came to the unscientific conclusion that weapons of war have resulted in technologies that have saved more lives and bettered our standard of living many, many more times over than if they had never been invented at all. It’s just sad that killing has to be our impetus -- or maybe the impetus is the desire NOT to be killed.

Enola Gay is indeed up off the ground, and the catwalk that goes by it has an added shield on it. You can still get pretty close to her, or at least you could. I took these back in 2014.

That’s actually a pretty good way of thinking about it. Just take the radial engine and large plane tech of bombers and how it was used to create fleets of civilian airliners that made the world smaller. And the same for the turbojet engine. The B -47, with its 30-degree swept wing and podded engines set the design standards for most all jetliners to follow. I imagine all of those discoveries would have been made in time, but they were certainly accelerated by the necessities of war.

That is awesome, I have been to SAC by Omaha several times (my neck of the woods) , Smithsonian Air and Space, and the Naval museum in Pensacola, but this looks as good as any of those.  B36 is an amazing machine, as is the B58, and so many others.

The first season, I recall them actually making all the parts. They were also driving shitty trucks. A year or two later, “ yeah, lets grab this frame, that tank, and um oh we’ll make the air filter look like a hydrant. yeah we really care about firefighters, and we wanted to show that appreciation ......”

The museum has a number of 1-of-1/1-of- <5 aircraft as well. The first Air Force One (and three of the presidential aircraft used before that term was created), experimentals including the X-29 (in the photodump), Boeing Bird Of Prey, the X-3 Stiletto (which looks absolutely insane), the YF-12A (predecessor to the Blackbird), the YF-23, XF-85 Goblin, X-36, TACIT MOTHERFUCKING BLUE...
