After !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , work crews from several different companies have arrived to begin clearing the toppled rail cars from the Port Authority’s tracks, a task that may take two more days.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Initially the Authority planned to run LRTs through the unused Allentown line, but this was quickly stopped due to concerns about vibrations from the removal process, as well as two incidents where machinery struck the still energized o verhead lines.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

There were no injuries, but out of an abundance of caution the lines were shut back down, so shuttle buses are the only way for riders to reach Downtown from South Hills Junction. Frustrated riders reported wait times of 30-120 minutes for shuttles.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Further exacerbating issues, the Wabash Tunnel, Smithfield Street Bridge, and East Carson Street are all closed indefinitely , and the Libert y and 10th Street Bridg es, closest to the detours, are all restricted due to construction. Needless to say, morning rush-hour was bad, and evening rush will not be any better.

If they are having those sorts of delays, it sounds like they need to be providing more buses, and clearing the way for them, whether  by blocking off lanes, overriding lights (either by technical measures, or just with police directing traffic), or just escorting them through. Sure that will block up car traffic, but car traffic can more easily reroute (and you don’t want those public transit users to start driving).

More buses would help, but the major problem is they’re bottle-necked .

Kinja'd!!!

Rail traffic is being stopped at South Hills Junction (red arrow) and buses are taking people from there into town along Warrington and Arlington aves and across the Liberty Bridge (orange line). The bridges and tunnels marked are closed.

The only other viable option would be to route the buses back down to Route 51, and from there to the Fort Pitt Tunnel, which is backed up in the best of circumstances.
