Today I observed a Flying Spur climbing a hill. I marveled at the size, the beauty, the opulence, the sound as that unstressed TT W12 grumbled its way up. I really like these cars, and the Rapide too...
Then I heard the defeated drone of the old-ass torque converter autotragic waking its lazy ass up to make a long-winded attempt at a lower gear.

Is it wrong I’d prefer one of these over a Phantom...

Not at all. Horses for courses. These are more of a driver’s car from what I can gather
- back doors
are
present
but it’s not exactly set up for chauferring. These are smaller and probably cheaper to buy/run
, and faster too. Less wafty, less land yacht.

There is a certain grace to these older Bentleys, but they’ve definitely fallen on the edge of their cultural relevance. It’ll be another ten years before they start climbing in price, as most Bentleys do. It doesn’t help that I always felt like the Flying Spur was a step back compared to the Phaeton. If I was a Bentley customer in 2005, I doubt I would have bought anything other than an Arnage.
