Out of curiosity I’ve been looking at 2018 VW Polos.
Of the 1,063 Polos on Autotrader.
Three are diesels, 1,060 are petrols.
116 are automatic, 947 are manuals.
There are zero diesel automatics and 944 petrol manuals.
All of them, bar one is a five door.
I sort of want a VW Polo, GTi, 1.8TSi 192bhp, 3 door.
BUTTTTTTTTTT,
part of me then wants a
Vauxhall Corsa, VXR, 1.6T 202bhp, 3 door.
Then I think, hmmmm
Ford Fiesta, ST-2, 1.5T Ecoboost 197bhp, 3 door.
Then there’s the
Audi S1, 2.0TFSi 230bhp.
Kia Pro-Cee’d GT, 1.6 T-GDi 201bhp.
Peugeot 208 THP GTi Prestige, 1.6 208bhp.
SEAT Leon SC Cupra 300, 2.0 296bhp.

Stop rubbing your European hatchback in our face. Not only is the manual almost dead here, cars aren’t far behind it.

Just saw my first Cee'd GT today, looks like proper fun.

I love you, but I also hate you. Mostly because I want to be you with a ll these fabulous options.

Sorry. I’ve got a bit of a crush on small hatchbacks now.
The good thing is they are accessible here. Lol.

Go for like, a quarter of the power. Then you can shift exclusively at redline and still be under the speed limit

Manuals are disappearing around the World as well, it’s not just in the US. In fact, it’ s the US market that’s keeping manuals in performance cars alive.

The early Cee’d was quite a nice car, it was nothing flash, but honest and reliable and they’ve improved further since then.

Sorry.
But then I get an urge for a small coupe or bigger hatchback.

I dress pretty casual so I’d prefer a VW hoodie. A polo might be nice for work though
![]() 08/02/2018 at 19:20 |

I like it because it’s a solid reliable, sporty little car.

I do wish we had the 80 MPG (or whatever) Polo with the little tdi over here. That would be a perfect commuting car.
![]() 08/02/2018 at 19:26 |

But I also want a 2011 Renault Wind.

I like my colleagues 1.2 TSi. I don’t want a d iesel (not just because Europe has turned on diesels and cities are either banning them or raising charges for them).
Her’s is a lovely blue too.
![]() 08/02/2018 at 19:32 |
|
I only want or need something around 130-150bhp (though to be honest, 110bhp would do).
![]() 08/02/2018 at 19:34 |

OMG, that blue. That is amazing. I wish more cars were actual colors
![]() 08/02/2018 at 19:36 |

If 110 will do, 80 will do. Aren’t you in the UK where the highest speed limit is 70 MPH?
![]() 08/02/2018 at 19:46 |
|
There’s some nice colours about.
![]() 08/02/2018 at 19:48 |
|
Ye’, I’m in the U.K. and 70mph is the highest speed limit, but I think I’d still want north of 100bhp.
![]() 08/02/2018 at 19:56 |
|
That’s amazing. Usually only sports cars or ecoboxes are offered in cool colors here. And then, the majority of people just buy from the dealer lot and the dealers only order inoffensive colors. So my commute is a sea of white/gray/black lease specials with the occasional red thrown in. We need more vivid blues, green, yellow, orange, etc.
![]() 08/02/2018 at 20:05 |

For the most part people stick with regular colours or colours that are common so as to keep the price and sell-ability up for when they want to sell it.

My Mum is on the lookout for a subcompact daily driver instead of her LR D4.
Choices include:
Kia Picanto...mainly because it comes in yellow but also has a manual gearbox and a 7 year warranty.
Suzuki Ignis GL...again it can be had a with a manual but not in yellow and only a 3 year warranty. Plus it’s more than the Kia.
Suzuki Swift GL...base model has manual box, no yellow, well priced but only 3 year warranty.
Suzuki Swift Sport...comes with 6 speed manual, available in yellow but at a 75% premium on the Swift...
Honda Jazz VTi...well priced, manual but no yellow and only a 5 year warranty
VW Polo 70TSi Trendline...very well priced at the moment and a manual gearbox but no yellow (or any bright colours) and only a 3 year warranty.
The search is going to be interesting...

So yellow is a big issue then. Lol.
I’m not a fan of the Jazz/Fit or the Ignis.
The Picanto is a nice car, nothing exciting but not an unpleasant place to be
The Polo is more solid built but if colour is the leading factor then the Picanto with the more ‘custardy’ orange-yellow look like the winner over the price hike for the Swift.
The Kia Stonic is a nice yellow metallic
1.0, 120ps, manual petrol.

Yellow was a preferred colour but I think she’ll consider anything garish!
Honestly, I think the Picanto, the Swift and the Polo are the frontrunners, simply on dynamics and packaging alone.
Oz doesn't get the Stonic. The driveline package never made sense for Oz.

Is ‘Lime Light’ a colour option in Oz?
It’s the 1.25 X-Line. The colour is a premium option though.
There aren’t any garish colours for those three vehicles unfortunately.
The Toyota Yaris is available in yellow in the Ascent spec in Oz.
I’ve just looked at a few Oz car sites such as Citroen, Peugeot, Renault, etc... not a lot of options there really.

It’s based on the Twingo.
So a Twingo in hardtop convertible form.
The roof is similar to the Ferrari 458, only eight years sooner.

I had utterly forgotten about the Toyota Yaris...I wonder why?
![]() 08/02/2018 at 23:38 |

It’s a Yaris, like Toyota in many areas, it’s faded into obscurity.
They’ve gave the cars a quirky front end to try and I guess make them relevant.
You’ve got the Aygo, Yaris, Auris, Avensis, Verso, Prius, Prius Plus, etc...
They are just so non descript . The Yaris is probably the best looking one of the lot.

You know my family came from the general region you live in, right? I wonder if there’s some program for repatriation...

The case is often Corsa V Polo. Polo for build quality and reliability or Corsa for cheap thrills easy cheap maintenance and fun driveability especially as the driving feel has improved so much for both the Astra and the Corsa.

Pretend you are 74 years old, going on 23. Now suggest why that would be a good idea...dead set I'm curious!

i just like the styling of them, with the hint of early Suzuki in the rear pillar.

“ I know this is going to sound a bit off , but I’d like to repatriate because you have such a wide selection of manual hatchbacks available in your market .”
![]() 08/03/2018 at 12:44 |
|
It is a slightly off reason if that’s the only reason.
While manual hatchbacks will pretty much be a thing for the foreseeable future, three door models are getting rarer to buy new.
But there are always small, medium and large size estates, lifted and non lifted to choose from.
The great thing about the U.K. is you can bring in almost any vehicle, get it inspected by VOSA (the vehicle inspectorate) (if that vehicle isn’t on the system), make a couple of modifications such as adding a rear foglight and separating the weird U.S. dual use brake light/indicator function, get it added to the system and your off, also no 15 or 25 year law on imports. Simply bring it, get it inspected, if safe, register it and drive.

My other reason is that you guys have great weather and could probably use my skills when you finally break with the EU (or break with the UK, whichever).
![]() 08/03/2018 at 14:30 |

I’m in England, there are only a few in Scotland that want independence from Britain. Many Scots will tell you Nicola Sturgeon is an absolute idiot, so is Alex Salmond, only after what they can get. Lol.
I think our weather is comparable with Washington State or Pennsylvania. Hot summers, cold winters and wet spring and autumns. The way it should be.
My area.
![]() 08/03/2018 at 15:13 |

I also love Carlisle (it was the centre point for my first trip to the UK), my family name is from right across the border (my ancestors on the male line ran that part of Scotland for many centuries), I love the Lake District, and would rather go to Edinburgh (or even Manchester/Liverpool) than London if I need/want a big city. I found the weather in your region very agreeable as well...
Scotland still, to me, seems more European than England/Wales. During the Brexit vote, I also believe the Scots were heavily in the Remain camp (it split on the border). I don’t think it would be as much pure independence as wishing to remain in the EU that would drive a push for breakup.

I think the cities and big towns in England and Scotland are more European than smaller towns and villages but since the Polish came some eight/nine years ago even those places have become more European.
Carlisle has a large population of Polish and many other countries.
Our County Council building has a biedronka right outside it’s front door.
The Scots and Northern Irish were in the remain camp, not so much the Welsh but England whilst making up about 50% of the U.K. land mass, makes up over 84% of the population.
England 55million+
Scotland 5.4million
Wales 3 million+
Northern Ireland 1.8million.
The whole U.K. - E.U. relationship is complicated, very complicated and very boring. Even living amongst it is hard to fully understand.
