Don’t mind me, I’m over here trying to recreate a part that we don’t have drawings of based on potato pics and a coworker taking measurements which are inaccurate - and ignoring which ones I’m asking for. Via email. For a part with a hole pattern and 20 holes.

I can make a new part that mounts differently and uses self-drilling screws. I’d rather not. I think the customer or us already did that once and now there are extra holes. Which ones will coworker measure?

Kinja'd!!!

Self-drilling screws are a bad idea for the part anyway, because it *probably* needs to mount with a 1/2" gasket. So at least my 1/4" machine screws can be off a good bit and FTP on if they cross-thread because sheet metal . Huzzah.

Huh, that about sums up my job, and then I have to quote said part and figure out the work routings and then get complaint emails that it’s too expensive and has too long of a lead time.

Lucky you. I’m sitting in a marathon curriculum revision meeting with everyone talking at once. I just got back into town last night and didn’t make the first meeting. That’s why I am sitting in the corner praying for a giant meteor to strike.

We have been doing this curriculum revision over the past year, and it only becomes more of a cluster fuck with each passing month.

Wanna trade?

I finally broke. On looking at the pictures the umpteenth time I realized that my coworker would never succeed in getting good measurements anyway because it apparently shipped from here without the holes. I.e. somebody drilled the holes in the field, probably twice (there was no set of holes that matched them having been punched.)

I decided that I was going to call for what gasket gets used, and since I knew where the holes were supposed to be but weren’t, the new part will miss every single previous hole save two, on purpose. If I can’t reverse engineer the “right” hole spacing, I have enough precision to be *exactly wrong*. They can drill the new holes in the field and just deal - I haven’t wasted any *less* time than they will.

In other words, “ it’s my will! I’ve got the keys to the kingdom! My, mine, I’m the god, I’m the god!

I had to redraw/update a part yesterday that has five different hole sizes, welded parts, a very specific bend sequence, and 54 holes almost no two of which have the same dimensions on any axis. I drew it up so that our guys would be able to make it on the turret punch but we may be subbing it out for laser. Go figure.

I once spent a large portion of a month trying to establish fluid cooling unit specifications. Except - what I was told to size things off of (heat transfer/condenser units) are nearly always oversized for our applications, and what I should have been sizing things off of is the largest compressor in a model line. Didn’t know. What I did know and had been told expressly was expressly wrong.

A bunch of difficult and totally useless information gathering later, I ran into a lack of feedback, and the impossibilities of establishing what a given part number of fluid cooler was good for, because we keep assigning and reassigning the same model numbers for different manufacturers, different sizes, and even different submodels (different number of leads - internals) that were all wildly different.

Would it surprise you that that organizing project is currently on the shelf?

And then, then, it was pointed out today that an electrical spec sheet on a drawing from Friday was not updated, because I updated the drawing and sent it by email... and *this. guy.* we have then immediately circulated it for approval by other people, by fishing for the folder where finalized drawings go and *attaching that version*. The old we-thought-it-was-finalized drawing that I’d been asked to update - or something.

You. Ass.

I update a drawing easily 5-6 times in an email string due to little things, and I had no reason to think the drawing was finalized - so why would I have put it in the finalized drawing folder and two other folders while it’s still in the “circulate by email” stage?

It never occurred to me he would re-attach from the wrong place instead of forward my email. “But muh attach doesn’t stay when I hit reply all”. FFS

It gets better... or worse, but tl;dr.
