Been watching a lot of reviews on the TRD pro tacoma lately since it was just “introduced” for 2019 and the embargoes have been lifted and a common theme is present in many of them: “cramped cabin”. Specifically that the roof is too low and the floor too high.
Yes, the floor is high but at least it has a reason to be (high floor sills means great breakover clearance and no body damage) but the low roof? Seems like an oversight. Frankly I suspect a lot of that has to do with reusing a lot of the cab design from the 2nd gen but being required to add a sunroof for people who for some reason actually want a sunroof in their truck (and the associated structural beam present in all trucks).
Anyway, I wanted to see if raising the cab height would make the truck too ungainly visually and here are the results.
BEFORE
AFTER
Honestly I think it makes the truck look a little more proportioned. I always though the 3rd gens looks strangely long. It’ s got a 1st gen Tundra vibe which I quiet like. probably wouldn’t be great for their CD figures though...
oh well.

Agreed, that taller photoshop looks way better. Every time I see one they do appear super long. And then I ride in my wife’s uncle’s Taco and there’s no space in there.

yeah, frontal area is a killer. that being said. I would take a .5 highway mpg hit to, you know, fit well. As much as I think Trump is doing the wrong thing with Fuel economy standards, I think the relentless pursuit of best EPA numbers isn’t good for the consumer in many cases...especially since its quiet easy to game.

CoD isn’t gaming the system though, that actually makes a difference. Every one complains about modern trucks being too big and now they want midsize trucks to be even bigger.

I agree, Im just speaking generally. even still, I’m happy to trade a little highway mileage for something as important as user comfort. I mean, you can’t let the mpg tail wag the dog too much.

I wonder which modern vehicles could benefit most from the Alex Issigonis school of interior space design: get the biggest guys around, sit them on your intended seat, and have them move their arms around - Draw. That. Envelope.

I think the CAFE rules need to change to promote smaller vehicles instead of larger ones. Frontal area is the easiest way to get those MPGs back, I know consumers are all about big everything right now, but there really should be more incentive to produce smaller cars instead of bigger ones.

it is a weird deal that footprint is the CAFE factor. that being said, its actually paid some dividends in interior space since your incentives to push the wheels to the edge.

Tacoma’s have always had a high floor and it has always annoyed me since I’m a tall person. It’s limited my desire from I would like to own one to I am okay occasionally driving one.

The tall floor is ann oying, but I get why they do it and I respect that...but why not make a taller greenhouse and mitigate that with higher seat mounts or more headroom? Drives me a little crazy.

I’ve never u n d e r s t o o d the headroom issue with the Tacomas, I m u s t n o t wea r the right hat?
My 86 had a sunroof and was fine, 2005 was fine, 2017 is fine.. I’ve never noticed a head room issue..

drive like this;
I did notice going into the 2nd gen that the rearview mirror wouldn’t adjust high enough - I ended up using a ImMrYo mirror riser and it was perfect. Now the 3rd gen tucks up nice without the mod.

Yes, yes, and yes. Every Toyota Mini-truck I’ve driven from the ‘ 87 4-runner to the 2013 taco has been this way. Then I get in my Isuzu that is actually a smaller truck and I’m like I fit!

Oh man I know what you mean about the seats. I’ve been in the back of a 2nd gen a lot and I don’t have much to complain about. I mean, none of us are tall and the cruiser is certainly more roomy but really...is it THAT bad? oh, have you been in the back seats of older trucks?
That being said if I went to a tacoma from the cruiser I would have a hard time adjusting to the low floor and relatively low roof. I like my cars to be ROOMY! even driving a 4th gen 4runner versus the GX is a big difference in greenhouse.

moving into the front seats on the 2nd gen is always a trip for me coming out of the cruiser.

Low roof mean Prinsu and Maxtrax still fit in the garage and underground parkade though.. plus I can wash the roof without a chair.

I feel like the high floor thing is common in all Toyota trucks (except Tundra) and the 4Runner.
Like in my ‘94, my legs are almost completely flat with the floor.

Keep in mind the box on the third gen in almost an inch higher than the second gens, and the cab height stayed the same;

No sunroof for me.
The seating position is definitely more like a car than a typical truck, but like you said, for good reason.

Maybe I’m just weird but to my tallish skinny body the high floor, low seat,and narrowish front seat areas in both my previous 2nd gen 4Runner and current Taco are really comfy. Compared with roomier SUVs(most of this I guess is in comparison to my family’s 2004 MDX that I’ve driven long miles in) I find that the low seating position l ets me stretch my legs out more which I find much more comfortable on a long trip. Also the seat actually fits me, most larger trucks and SUVs I’ve driven seem to have seats designed for someone 40 pound heavier than me so I’m either sitting between the bolsters as if there were no bolsters at all or listed over one way or the other

I have been fine it’s headroom in Toyota trucks. Until the 3rd gen. That darn structural beam is exactly where my head goes. I’m 6’4” and sit fairly upright. The sunroof in the Sequoia doesn’t work for me either. Oddly, a 4runner with the sunroof was fine.
Back seats, well if I want better rear seating, I should get a different vehicle. I was carting around 5 people this week, with my son in a booster seat. Admittedly, it was tight. With 4, obviously it’d be better, but if you’re behind me, I’m not one to compromise my seating position too much.

The Tacoma has had this problem for a long time. The first time I sat in a 06 between the interior layout, materials, color a setting position I wasn’t sure if I was in a Turck or a really tall Camry.
