Kinja'd!!!

Here’s the situation - I accidentally signed up for a Sam’s Club membership via Groupon. I was planning on doing this anyway, splitting the cost with a co-worker, so I’m not going to stress over $17.50. I need to step out and run some errands, including refueling , and so now it comes down to which of the two warehouses I should buy my fuel from today. The price is the same - $2.43/gal - but Costco sells Top Tier gasoline whereas Sam’s doesn’t.

Every couple of months I run a bottle of Chevron fuel system cleaner through the tank, and I’m wondering if I should stick with Costco, or risk it with Sam’s thinking that the additive I put in should make up for potentially lower quality gasoline?

My mother-in-law pays for a Sam’s Club membership and my wife and I mooch off of her and use it as well. We have our own card linked to their account. My car (2016 Mazda6) has never acted any differently on Sam’s gas than on any other.

If the price is the same go with Costco and top tier. Top Tier is great for your engine and should always be used when possible.

its been my personal experience (take it as you will) that the cost savings of lower tier gasoline doesn’t balance out with the mileage and maintenance cost differences.  Its like clogged arteries...a truckload of branflakes isn’t going to make up for years of baconators.

I would go with neither. In my experience, my 4Runner runs like absolute garbage on Costco gas: down on power and a dramatic drop in economy.

Top Tier or GTFO.

I’m assuming that you have read this report: https://gasprices.aaa.com/fuel-quality/

If not, this is the important bit:

Among brands tested, non-TOP TIER gasolines caused 19 times more engine deposits than TOP TIER brands after just 4,000 miles of simulated driving.

If you have some more time, this is an in depth report: https://www.aaa.com/AAA/common/AAR/files/Fuel-Quality-Full-Report.pdf . Important bit from this one:

It’s Costco for the poors, a real freakshow based on past experiences . I’m just trying to help a friend that can’t afford a full membership. I may pop in on occasion, but I’m a loyal Costco shopper dating back 35+ years.
