My mom died April 15th of this year (after assuring my sister and I that her taxes were, in fact, filed). My Significant Other, who is Japanese, wanted something to remember her by (she was in Japan when the funeral took place). My sister and I selected some teacups, among them this one:

Kinja'd!!!

My parents were married in 1953, with WWII having been over for less than a decade. So it sort of makes sense that what was probably a wedding gift says on the bottom:

Kinja'd!!!

Yes, despite years of wear, it still says “Made in Occupied Japan.” It’s china, but it’s not what that usually means.

Wow - we bragged about that. Just ... wow.

Believe it or not, it was part of the rebuilding process. Japan needed to make and sell stuff, after the war the only market was America. The Americans wanted to make sure only new items were being sold because that would assure someone was paid to make it and the item wasn’t something looted from the bombed out cities, so they insisted everything be stamped that way. Germany did the same thing. This lasted until 52.

Was it the best solution, maybe not but 70 years ago sensibilities were different.

Yeah, it’s a total snap back to when we won big, and others lost. Nowadays we’re far from the bit of greatness we had back in 1945. It’s hard candy.
