Kinja'd!!!

This is dumb, right? Educate me on motor bikes OPPO.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Thanks for the advice guys (and gals)! The tl;dr is I still kinda want one and this one is overpriced. Kits with bikes are available for about $330. Also in order to be legal I need a 48cc one.

I think if I can convince my SO to buy one we might go for it. They look like cheap fun.

The only thing I can’t figure out is if you can take them on bike paths / lanes or not. There is a lot of conflicting information on that one, so I think I’ll just ask around. I wouldn’t want to take it on a mixed use (human and bike) path, but we have several dedicated bike paths that would be really awesome to be able to use.

Thanks again and you know I’ll post if we decide to pull the trigger.

Start with a terrible department store bike frame, no front brakes, bottom level components that are doing good to carry a rider at 12mph , then add an 80cc motor to it, don’t register it with DOT, and don’t insure it. What could possibly go wrong?

For $500 you could probably get an actual moped, ie. a Puch or Motobecane, etc.

These motor kits, no matter what the seller tries to tell you are NOT LEGAL FOR ROAD USE.

Or like, this:

80 cc?

Anywhere you ride that except your own driveway is super illegal. Requires a motorcycle license, registration and insurance.

That depends greatly on the state.

There’s some states where anything under 150 cc is fair game.

Conversely, even 1 watt of power here in Ohio requires either type approval by the state (for “motor-assisted bicycles”) or DOT certification (for motorcycles), registration, and (if it’s not a motor-assisted bicycle) insurance.

Looks like you’re mostly correct. Hmm

Motorized scooters cause some confusion. They are now street legal for all ages, but only where the speed limit is less than 25 mph.

The ad is in OK , so that’s what I went with. 50cc cut off to be a moped. That’s a full blown motorcycle.

This is just the standard ebay kit. My dad put together 2 of these and loved it. Him and my step-brother put them together and ride them along the railroad tracks.

For that price you can get a real scooter, and have stpid levels of fun, without, you know, dieing.

They have to be speed capped to that, and also usually have to have a displacement of less than 50cc to not require a license/etc.

On a different note, even less-than-50cc motorized bicycles can be pretty fun! :)

They’re known as “Tweaker Harley’s”. In CA you’re required to have a helmet on even as an adult.

Some? Name them.

There might have been as many as three or four, 15-20 years ago but not now. It seems every state decided to revise their moped laws to make them more restrictive in the past decade.
