Kinja'd!!!

This... beautiful creature popped up on my Zillow when I was doing a shop search. I am so in love I can’t even.

Kinja'd!!!

Highlights: 4,200 square feet, 4 bed, 6 bath on 0.81 acres.

Also it is a fucking tree house.

Kinja'd!!!

What is worse is, thanks to the miracle of a housing boom in my area, buying at the bottom of the market, and equity , I could conceivably afford this if I sold my house for market value. (And decided not to buy a shop)

Kinja'd!!!

Downside is it is located in the south part of town. Nice, but also far from downtown.

Also a lot of it is pretty 80s.

Kinja'd!!!

Luckily as I went to type out this article the thing went pending, so I no longer have to pine for it.

Kinja'd!!!

It would have been terrible to give up living so close to downtown.  But man this place is/ was a dream house for me.

Damn, that’d be phenomenal if it wasn’t in, you know, Oklahoma.

And 4 bed/6 bath? Great opportunity for someone who poops way too much.

Mannn I need to get out of Chicago. Before I clicked that link I was like “thats a $1. 5MM easy, nope A THIRD of that! That’ s insane. I couldn’t buy a decent two bedroom, two bath apartment around here for that.

Hey now. It isn’t that bad.

Right? My guess is a bathroom for every bedroom, plus a half bath for the kitchen and one for the living area(s)?

Also I 100% guarantee if I owned a house with 6 bathrooms  they would all always be out of toilet paper.  Because FML.

Holy cow, that place is amazing! How many weeks out of the year does that outdoor space work? When I was in TN, I would only want to be outside about 3 weeks out of the year. Not sure what Tulsa is like though. That house would be multiple millions of dollars out here.

Yeah there are some benefits to flyover country. That said, that price does seem cheap. I’m guessing the location isn’t helping a lot (boring, suburban neighborhood) and it probably needs updating. Still, $500k will get you in a decent sized house in any neighborhood in town.

I like the 80s-ness. It’d be 3x that much in my area, maybe a little more than that in my zipcode.

EDIT: Just noticed , Spirit of Ecstasy on the kitchen counter, not something you see every day. The Hudson’s Bay blanket is a nice touch, too.

Wow, you were right. That seriously pisses me off.

I have a client who does floating tops - usually made from half-cut logs - with exposed plumbing beneath. But they have the decency to make it chromed.

No, it quite probably isn’t (I’ve only passed through, never spent any appreciable time there) . I’ve just never lived more than about 90 minutes from an ocean. I’m assuming Tulsa is at least 8 hours from the Gulf of Mexico.

I’m more just bitter that my house only cost about $60k less, but is a 2 bed/1 bath, 1,000 sq/ft, and both of my next door neighbors’ houses are less than 25 feet from the exterior walls of mine.

California problems , amirite?

I always try to keep a healthy stockpile of TP, so there would be plenty in the house. However, I would undoubtedly forget to put a new roll i n the chosen throne room on taco night.

Haha yeah. Flyover country has its perks. So does California .

I will say even with our housing boom everyone I talk to is impressed with how cheap real estate is here.

I thought it was tasteful, too. High-end modern 80s kitchens were fairly timeless, aside from the edges of the counters.

Kinja'd!!! fintail > Eric @ opposite-lock.com

I have a slight thing for pristine original kitchens. When I look at listings of houses from the 80s and prior, I check out the kitchens to see if they have yet to be gutted, and smile when I see something that was cared for - even if it something garish from the 70s . I doubt I would change the one in that house much.

Kinja'd!!! Eric @ opposite-lock.com > fintail
06/29/2018 at 21:50

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah, that kitchen is totally livable. The interiors of the 70s are the absolute worst, though. I was going to say something about it but thought you might prove me wrong.

What’s funny is that I find 60s kitchens quaintly-livable and a well kept 50s kitchen is superior to just about every other era, including today. I wish I had pictures/video of my grandfather’s house in La Mirada that was built in the 50s and all original when he sold it 10 years ago. It was in a fairly expensive neighborhood and built to upper-middle-class standards of the era... I always loved his house.

I like some slightly offbeat things. Cheap 70s stuff can be awful, but custom quality items can be pretty unique - they were definitely more daring then than the dull lookalike stuff built by people with money now.

Here’s a 70s house I had an eye on when it was listed - I think the only thing I’d do would be to remove the carpeting (and maybe store it somewhere for preservation), otherwise, this is pretty fun:

https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/492-Mcnary-St-Independence-OR-97351/48513428_zpid/

The entryway pushes my buttons too.  And look at the price, this isn’t in BFE either, this is a stone’s throw from the middle of Salem.

For 60s custom houses, Arthur Erickson’s “Catton House” in West Vancouver does it for me:

https://www.arthurerickson.com/wood%20houses/catton%20house/

This would need some changes though as it only has a carport.

My grandma lives in an early 60s rambler just south of here (worth dozens of times the original purchase price) which is effectively untouched. The kitchen is small by modern standards, but is functional, and has the period combination of a cooktop and wall oven. The maple cabinetry has aged well over 50 years, along with the original mottled seafoam green counters. She was once lamenting not wanting to spend the money on a renovation, I told her to not touch it. This is what I think would be just a nice middle class house, but with some things considered nice at the time - 2 car garage, 2 bathrooms, central heat, huge fireplace, etc. The subdivision is also roughly all on 1/4-1/3 acre lots, they don’t do it like that anymore around here. They’d cram 3 houses on her lot today.
