A Texas woman filed for $1 million in damages from a Chinese buffet after she allegedly suffered a terrifying bout of “fried rice syndrome.”

Germaine Mobley, 62, said went to Asian King Buffet in Waxahachie for a lunch in 2016 that left her gravely ill in an intensive care unit, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

Mobley claimed in the lawsuit that she was sickened by Bacillus cereus, also known as “fried rice syndrome,” a type of bacteria often found in foods kept at room temperature.

Mobley said she ordered fried rice at the restaurant and began to feel sick during the drive home.

“Everything tasted fine,” Mobley !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

Mobley, who had pre-existing health conditions, went to the hospital the following day when her health continued to deteriorate, according to the news station.

“I just started vomiting,” she told WFMY. “The next morning, I was having problems breathing, so my husband called an ambulance.”

She stayed in the ICU for eight days, where she was put on a ventilator, according to the Dallas News.

“’Fried rice syndrome’ sounds like a joke, but it’s very serious,” Mobley’s attorney Kathryn Knotts told the Dallas News.

Asian King Buffet’s owner has denied Mobley’s allegations that its food made her sick, WFMY reported.

I mean, on one hand, resaurants should follow procedures to avoid this sort of thing. On the other hand, she did go to a chinese buffet....

Reputability or not, I have heard of this before, particularly in the context of takeout boxes. Rice is a particular magnet for toxin-making bacteria and a lot of places have bad reuse practices on their rice.

Fried rice is best when made with leftover rice, b ut that means that they have to take good precautions with it.

If they’re taking the leftover white rice that sat out all day, then making fried rice and letting it sit out all day, that’s a recipe for disaster.

I love good Chinese food, but abhor those “Pan-Asian” buffet joints. They all seem to be varying levels of awful.

The hell of it is that the rice is the single cheapest thing in the place to buy, store, and prepare. By far . IT’S OKAY TO THROW IT OUT SOMETIMES, GUYS.

Even cooked, it lasts a pretty long time if stored properly. My in-laws are giving it to us all the time, and it *can* last 2 weeks in the fridge. Once it goes, though, it’s nasty, and will make you sick.

We know Koreans who have absolutely pioneered the art of rice storage. For really long-term storage, one can freeze rice flat in quart bags - it can then be reheated evenly a bag at a time, and it retains the moisture.

As to open storage, unrefrigerated , it’s better unsealed and cold (drying out) than kept hot and humidified after about the first four hours. It’s easier to revive dry cold rice than collapsing mush rice.

I got really sick after eating day old chinese food last night.

Chinese food is like the opposite of Pizza. Leftover pizza a day later is excellent . Even cold. Chinese food gets insanely gooey, rubbery, nasty, and you get sick.
