this ought to get good......

Kinja'd!!!

but it needs to sit higher, and have bigger tires, and blow black smoke everywhere, and it needs larger bumpers, and lights, lots of bright blinding offroad lights, it needs a charging receptacle that looks like large misshapen genitalia that hang from under the back bumper . it needs to take up 4 parking spaces (2 wide,2deep) it needs to be tall enough that you cant see around it......

did i get everything?.........

I gotta say, honestly, that I can’t picture a single way an electric pickup would tempt me over the myriad choices on the market right now.  Not to mention I don’t see a single reason Tesla should bother building one.

It’s a pretty huge marked, and their motors could probably take claim to great performance (albeit for a short lapse of time), it would really upset the market, which is what Tesla has been trying to do with other cars in other segments

I don’t think it would upset the market except to get laughed at. Being from the midwest and growing up with trucks do you realize how many people are still complaining about touchscreens and not just having 3 dials for HVAC controls? Tesla shows up with a spaceship looking truck full of screens and they will convert a very very tiny percentage of people.

Its a big market but that doesn’t mean just building one gets you a piece of it. Nissan and Toyota will tell you all about it. I mean...those are legit competitors their makes have spent a lot of money investing in and they are barely making a dent. To say nothing of people who try and mess with the formula like the ridgeline.

Tesla has a lot of good things going for them, one thing I think they would find they lack is a large overlap between their rapid fanbase and the needs and wants of pickup buyers.

I see a reason in fleet vehicles, but not in Tesla’s normal market. I can see it being used by tech companies doing services or delivery. Like a Google Fiber service truck, keeping its futuristic brand image with a tesla truck. Or other short range delivery purposes.

Trucks are horribly inefficient in the city and electric would let deliveries be made with less noise, point source pollution, and wasted energy.

If I can’t put a tuner on it so I can dump black smoke on everyone I’m not interested. If I can’t fit a 12" diameter, but only 4" long exhaust tip on it I’m not interested. If it doesn’t make really loud whiny turbo whooshy noises I’m not interested. /s

Seriously though modern pickups have nearly anything a person could want. A couple of things I could think of off hand are some convenient built in storage solutions for commonly used truck stuff, ie. ratchet straps, receivers , basic tools, trailer accessories etc. Something that is always easily accessible,  organized, and doesn’t take up box space. Apart from that it should have really good range, even fully loaded, be super tough and rugged, not loaded down with electronics and screens, and cheap, like mid trim F-150 cheap (which is still spendy).

I mean Nissan.  They’ve been trying to break into the FS truck market here for years, same as Toyota.  Its been a long uphill battle.  It doesn’t help that Toyota’s top truck guy is kind of an idiot and Nissan bet big on a diesel engine that required them to make a 5/8ths ton truck no one wanted.

It doesn’t matter that its electric, it needs a chrome grille, big enough to require its own street address, with a Tesla badge the size of a belt buckle in the center of it. Also, the top of the hood should be about four inches above the shoulder of the average height adult male. And make sure the bed is equally far off the ground, you want it to be as inconvenient as possible to load and unload and manage the cargo. And the trailer hitch should be at shin height and permanently attached, since nobody ever removes them anyway.

Kinja'd!!! HammerheadFistpunch > BaconSandwich is tasty.
06/26/2018 at 22:43

Kinja'd!!!2

Those things are nice but

1. range

2. outright cost vs running cost.

Its still going to be a tough sell. Even against a brand new king lariat 1492 high country its going to cost enough of a premium to make the operational expense moot.

Most trucks have storage under the back seat now, but it’s more of a bin where all of your shit collects, then there’s the Ram Box as well, but that takes up a bunch of bed space and is still just a box. I’d like to see something a little more organized than “here’s a bin to toss all your crap in”.

So, I’m on the hunt right now... Feel like it’s time to let my old Pathfinder go and get something newer/safer/more reliable. Drove a ‘15 Xterra Pro-4X manual last night - was a really nice truck, in great shape, and felt 10x better than the Frontier I drove a few months back , but I still prefer the manual in the Tacoma quite a bit. If I thought I could get the Xterra for like $23k (it’s listed at $28k) , I’d seriously consider going that way, but don’t see myself giving $27k for it when I could get a brand new Tacoma TRD Off Road for less than $35 k...

I really wasn’t planning to spend so much, but I do want something newer that will be reliable and I feel like I can keep forever (would likely be the first car my son drives as well - in 5 years) . Prefer manual, but a good automatic wouldn’t be out of consideration (Tacoma’s auto su cks ). I don’t want a full size truck and I want something capable to go camping & off-roading, and eventually, overlanding, but comfortable enough to daily drive 3-4 times per week. Not interested in a Jeep. Any thoughts?

I wouldn’t mind a share of this to Overland & Expo if you think others would like to chime in.

If you’re going brand new, my choice (and I’m a little biased here) would be the Tacoma you mentioned or a 4Runner.
If you plan on keeping it stock for awhile, you could go with the TRD pro models. That way you’d use the suspension and other bits for a while before needing to upgrade/modify.
If you plan to do mods soon, then go with the not so fancy packages.

Thanks - the TRD Pro is significantly more expensive, and I haven’t really looked into it much. What’s the most substantial thing(s) that make it better than the TRD Off Road?

Looks like “ FOX-patented Internal Bypass shocks. . . Designed to handle the high-speed suspension movement common in the dirt, these dampers feature 2.5-in. aluminum housings; hardened, oversize shock shafts; and remote reservoirs in the rear. What’s more, this rugged system helps provide more ground clearance, increased suspension travel, maximum damping and fade-free performance.” + better skid plate.
