SavageGeese: We have a long way to go before driverless cars and In the meantime, we discuss the worst driving habits, behaviors, and annoyances of modern drivers. In the video we detail common mistakes and how to avoid them. There will always there is always a debate on how bad people are at driving, but do people care enough to change?

We have all been guilty of at least one of these transgressions, knowingly or unknowingly . It may be preaching to the choir here but more people need to see this- Friends, Family, Co-Workers outside the community.

He makes great points. Especially the one about braking for every turn.  One thing not taught enough is how to modulate your speed with just using the accelerator and engine braking. Letting the car coast to slow down instead of constantly being on and off the brakes.

Yup he talks about that, especially on the highway.

Braking for curves on the highway is one of my maj or pet peeves ( outside of left lane camping and parallel driving)   as it creates a ripple effect

There’s a gross lack of consideration for others in today’s driving culture. I don’t know if it’s more pronounced in the US, but i t sure feels like we’re especially bad at it.

I learned a new (Japanese) word recently: meiwaku . Which really sums up a lot of how I try to approach most of my dealings with traffic. I can’t help the fact that every additional car (including mine) on the road makes traffic worse. I’m part of the problem. But signaling, leaving space, and timing maneuvers properly can really help minimize the amount of meiwaku you’re committing.

I am guilty of Speeding up when someone is trying to pass.

In my defense, I only do it when they’ve been behind me for the last 3 miles then decide to pass me 1/4 miles before their exit.

I disagree slightly on crossing the double line, merging and on camping on the left lane.

Firstly, in windy country roads where there’s clear visibility, it’s much smoother to cross the lines , it’s a common practice in Spain and Mexico and people tend to understand when not and when to cross them .

Secondly, whenever there’s a highway onramp with cars on it, it’s common curtesy everywhere I’ve driven to move over to the fast lane while the cars merge into the highway, it’s not fucking difficult, and when I’m merging into a highway I expect to be given space.

Thirdly, Camping on the fast lane is bad on a crowded highway, but not always. Most times the right lanes are in worse condition than the middle and overtaking lanes. If I’m in an empty highway, I’m driving on the fast lane, I’ll make special note of my mirrors to make sure I’m not annoying anyone but I’m still gonna do it.

We call the driving style in the US ‘solipsism’, aka. ‘nothing exists outside my own car.’

And yes, it’s worse in the US.

1. People cross the lines when there is oncoming traffic. It’s lazy driving, nothing more nothing less, and it’s dangerous to those around you.

2. It is courteous yes, but it is NOT your responsibility. It is the job of the vehicle coming down the ramp to merge into the flow of traffic, not your job to move for them.

3. Agreed. I will drive the “fast” lane on an empty highway, but am always aware of my mirrors. If I see a vehicle gaining, I move over.

It might be a thing of culture or something but I see most drivers quite unwilling   to cross the line if there’s a vehicle directly in their line of sight.

At night it’s also common to flash the lights in blind corners to check if someone’s comming.

Around here it’s rare to see someone who can keep it on their side in a corner......

Who knows why. We drive like shit here, but knowing we drive like shit inspires more precautious driving I think.

It’s seriously a mad house around here.

The majority drive like shit and have no idea they’re driving like shit, so they are extremely reckless as well. It’s just a lot of bad all mixed together, with everyone thinking they are more important than those around them.

Entitlemment seems to be the biggest deterrent to rod safety.

This.

If I’m passing someone on the highway, but see that they’re coming up to a slower vehicle, I’ll get on the throttle to clear the space so they don’t have to slow down before changing lanes and passing the other car.

On the flip side, it is possible to be too polite when driving. I’m thinking of people who, instead of following the traffic rules, wave someone else through a 4-way stop even though they were clearly there first.

Oh definitely. If they would have just gone through when they were supposed to, I’d already be on my way through the intersection by now, instead of coming to the realization that they’re trying to give up their right-of-way.

A l t h o u g h I d o s t i l l a p p r e c i a t e i t w h e n i t ’ s a b u s d r iver or something waving me through, knowing that they’ l l b e a c c e l e r a t i ng very slowly, or stopping soon. On the other hand, it’ s n ot very c o urteous towards the car a l r eady stuck behind them, to d ela y them even more . . .

Yes, totally different if it’s a bus or other big truck.
