I love that the LS is just so clean.  Makes the engine bay look way better.

The fabricated trim panel does a lot of that... no emissions, very little vacuum, electrical, no intercooler plumbing... and the fact that it is a custom build.

Objectively... that LS swap is a clean build, and the engine works well, is compact, and powerful.

Still don’t like it.

It is still robbing RX7 of it’s uniqueness.

Why not just put that LS in a C4 Corvette , and clean that car up just as nice?

This makes me want to put a cleaned up, custom built 20B in a gorgeous early C3 classic corvette, just to piss off Corvette fans as turnabout being fair play for co-opting so many RX-7s and so many other cars.

I like the Turbo II. However, the lS always makes an argument for itself.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

This is why I don’t swap out my Slant6 in the truck.  It is the soul of the thing, what makes it mine and unique.

The LS swap looks like it’s missing some things... such as the air filter box, a battery, a proper prop rod to hold the hood up and a *proper* way to latch the hood.

I’m gonna make a bet that either the heater, A/C or both doesn’t work on the one with the LS swap.

So if it was my choice, I would go with the stock Turbo II.

It’s an LS, air filter is down low front and center, you can see the intake tube feeding the TB. Battery in the trunk. Its a stripped race car. Actually both are raced

He built it up himself as a hobby car.

The build appears to be very well done.

My question remains... why is he not drifting a C4 Corvette, F-body, G-body, Holden  GTO, or other GM platform with an LS engine in it, with similar custom build quality, rather than an FC-RX7?

Or why is he not drifting with a 20B or other race-built Rotary in that RX7?

It is his car, it is his choice, it is his build, and the build looks very well done. The question is begged, is all.

Those are good questions. I’ve thought about doing this swap as well, but the more I contemplate it, the more inclined I am to just doing what you suggest. Why reinvent the wheel of the car is out there with the powertrain already ready to go. Cost wise, unless you source salvage everything, I would imagine It’d be easier to start with a similar platform. And with prices dropping on the corvettes, is probably just go that route for a base. But to each their own.

I still want to hellcat swap my 99 Dakota RT, so sometimes it’s just an emotional thing.

Because an rx7 is so much cooler than a c4 vette

Part of that appeal , is by being Rotary powered.

Early C3 is getting stratospheric. Later C3, is still approachable, though...

Kinja'd!!!

Simply painting, or wrapping the B-pillar roof bow in black, with a transparent tinted targa panel helps a lot of late-C3 through C6 Corvettes to have a jet fighter canopy look.

There’s always the Calloway Speedster look...

I am digging the C4 again a bit... maybe because it is a little under-appreciated, and I don’t like the looks of the C5 as much.

I disagree. There’s a huge subset of enthusiasts who see the Vette as a boring, straight-line-only midlife crisis car with the only highlight being the engine (obviously not talking about the modern vettes) . I’m not one of them, but given that outlook is it any surprise people would take the objectively best part of these cars and stuff them into other, sportier vehicles?

People may see it that way... and there is an element to that stereotype of mid-life crisis suffering guys buying cars, and Corvette being readily available for that.

But architecturally, Corvettes are sports cars. Steel chassis, fiberglass body, 2-seats, independent rear suspension, wide-track, modest length, relatively lighter weight than 2+2 coupes...

Arguably, 1980s Corvette is as much more of a purpose built sports car as an 80's RX7 is. Util FC, SA22C and FB didn’t even have IRS. FC is a heavier chassis than both FB (~800lbs heavier) and FD...

87 Turbo II RX-7s were about 2800lbs, but some FC variants, likely fully-loaded convertibles, got up to 3480lbs.

3280lbs is the curb weight of an 86 Corvette coupe.

Just because a lot of middle-aged guys bought Corvettes because they were readily available, and plentiful, doesn’t mean they were worthless as sports cars.

Even if they aren’t perfect, they are good canvas to start from, better than F-body, better than Fox Mustang, and any FWD Chrysler of the day... StarQuest was good and RWD, but still not built from the ground up as a sports car like a Corvette or an RX7.

I started out commenting here, DEFENDING the RX7, and advocating for preserving it in it’s rotary powered state...

My defense of the Corvette is, that it is the natural place for LS-powered sports car customization.

With as much work as went into the LS-build for that RX7... I’ll bet that work and $$$ would have gone farther in a Corvette, by not having to convert as much of the drivetrain and other engine support systems , but rather improving the rest of the car’s systems, like suspension and structural rigidity.
