After over half a year living in Germany, it is getting time to buy a car. What car is however quite open, but I’ve already been looking for some months.

In fact, I’ve been thinking about this since I moved here, see the link above. The Fox belonging to my girlfriends parents is still the benchmark, along with their 05 Touran with the smallest petrol engine. Both runs out of breath a bit too quickly on the Autobahn, although the Touran is more stable.
We’re only staying here in Germany for another three years, and not looking to spend a heap of money on something spectacular. These criterias should give something decent, but old:
1000-3000€
Manual gearbox (yes)
5-6 gears
Petrol engine
Reliable
Non-VAG
More comfortable than a VW Fox
New(ish) TÜV Prüfung
Cheap insurance
Bremen area (Hamburg acceptable in case of good deals)
I would like something bigger than a Polo/Corsa, but the amount of doors doesn’t matter. I don’t really want a wagon either, or anything bigger than a BMW 3-series due to parking. The fuel economy is usually inverse proportional to the amount of power produced in this price segment, so I can live with less power if I spend less money on fuel.
What have I found so far?

At this point, the Saab looks lik e the best deal to me. It’s old, but also a lot more car for the money than the others. I’ll probably spend more money on fuel though. I’ll update the post when I find new cars. What do you think oppo?

I guess they don’t have Honda’s in Deutschland? Seems like a 10-15 year old civic si would fit the bill.

Hondas of that vintage are rare, for some reason there are more from the 90's for sale. A Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla from that time are good options for sure, but there’s the problem of finding one for sale .

They do - Honda have a factory in the UK - but they don't do well in Europe. Subaru do even worse.

Unless you're about 2m or something, you'll fit.

The 323 wagons are nice cars...the mechanicals are dead reliable (a friend had one that got up to 450,000km on it with no real issues). We got them here in Canada as the Protege 5. They do rust like crazy though...
I'd say Saab or Almera! :)

I know. It’s probably a good and funny city car, but not excactly what I want.

Yes to the Xsara, BMW’s, Astra H, C30/S40 and the Kia. What remains is finding good ones inside the budget .

never sat in either, but the Dacia can’t be too bad
if comfort is the priority, try a Vectra from 95-02 they are the best seats i’ve ever had in a car.

The focus you found is also a 3 door, which is... thumbs down for city stuff...

A Vectra is a good idea, think I even found a good deal here:

only thing about the Vectras is cam and crank sensors are common, if one goes wrong do both at the same time.

It’s probably the reason why it’s cheap for the km and age..

I vote for the Citroen Xsara. Best of luck finding something you will enjoy.

Honda stopped offering cars European consumers wanted around the turn of the century, so sales plummeted. Market share has been tiny since, roughly zero.
