300-grain bullet, 29 grains of fast-burning powder and something like 60,000 PSI. As hot as this pistol will go, and it’s a handful. “Bear repelle nt,” my cousin likes to call it. Damned fun to shoot!

I believe a guy I work with has one of those - got it when he took his family around AK in a motorhome.

Yeah. But we had some trouble actually hitting them. We wound up blasting the wood frame to obivion. That Super Alaskan with 300-gr. loads is not exactly an ideal target pistol.

Looks like you'll need to get that screen replaced.

If it’s bear you’re worried about, then maybe. Otherwise a .357 mag is more than adequate. My cousin also loaded some 250-gr bullets -- with 34 gr of powder -- and it was much more manageable to shoot, but just as loud and the fireball came out almost three feet. You’d get a bear’s attention even if you missed him.

I imagine not. I can see how after a few rounds you’d be fighting your hand’ s instinct to anticipate the shot.

That Pixel 2 makes a pretty good potato, no? And that’s at close to dusk.

I feel it today a little. My hands are pretty strong, but the trigger finger got beaten up a little by the trigger guard.

man a barrel that short would make it a bear to handle, to say nothing of the bear.  I’ve also read (not that anyone REALLY knows) that the 45 isn’t a great slug for bears because its slower moving heavier slug doesn’t penetrate like a .357.  I carry a hot loaded 357 mag in bear country and for funsies.  The mag has KICK but even then its a 6 inch barrel.  Not sure what it would be like trying to push out a 45 with a little stubby barrel like that.

I like the .357 for the range of loads it can handle. A 158-gr .357 is a roudy round. The .454 cartridge uses a small pistol primer because, I’m told, the pressure will push a large primer out of the back of the shell.

Yes, it’s a handful and neither Cousin nor I would think to pretend otherwise. Makes quite a report as well.

I own a 4-inch .357 cop gun. But when I'm camping and such I take my 5-shot Chief's Special.

I've been told the Pixel camera is better than the iPhone. Certainly it's better than the Nexus 5.

It’s a handful. I can feel it today in my left wrist and in a couple of spots in my right hand. We weren’t trying to kid ourselves that it wasn’t really tough to manage. He also loaded some 250 -gr bullets with even more powder--34 grains -- that were just as loud but a good deal more manageable. Probably the ideal load.

I wonder how .45 long colt adds up. I haven't had a chance to shoot anything like that yet.

Neither of those rounds would be considered “good” for bear. They both push about 600J of energy in their hottest form. They’re probably better for shooting yourself once the bear starts to eat you.

For comparison, a .308 is considered a good bear round and it carries up to 3,700J of energy. Some guys feel that’s too light for big bears and will use a 30-06 (over 4,000 J of energy) for the big boys.

So you got me going down the rabbit hole. I found 37 confirmed cases of handgun bear defense... More 9mm than I would have thought. The main idea is many rounds, center mass.

Hey, learned something today. Had no idea you could get the Redhawk in snubby. I mean, considering the various calibers that the Redhawk comes in, I figured a 5" barrel was as short as you could go. Neato.

Now I’mma take some ibuprofen. My wrist hurts just thinking about the kick that thing has.

Shit, according to these 37 cases, your much better off carrying a 9mm. 100% success rate and much easier to put more rounds at center mass (33rd Glock mags FTW).

I always have a 9mm with me when in the boonies, but it’s for people, not wildlife. In bear country I always have bear spray. In the case of a charging bear, my kids are most likely going to run towards me. Despite having quite a bit of firearms training (in pistols and rifles), I feel much more comfortable firing bear spray rather than 9mm rounds in a situation like this. If I was really concerned about getting attacked by a bear, I’d just stay out of their territory, or carry a rifle (or a shotgun with slugs).

My cousin has like forty guns, half of them handguns. There’s a spiffy Kimber .45, half a dozen Glocks, a bunch of wheelguns. There’s a full-auto AR-15 and a full-auto Kalashnikov... His neighbor has brought over his full-on M-60 and I’ve fired several belts through that, as well as a full-auto Thompson submachine gun. I’ve fired the M-1 Garand at my cousin’s place, pistols with suppressors, all kinds of stuff. But of the entire lot, if I had to choose a single gun to go there and fire, it would be that Alaskan. That’s my favorite gun in the world. I might prefer a slightly longer barrel, probably four inches ... He got a deal on his and that’s what he was offered.

And yes, my non-shooting wrist and several spots on my firing hand are bothering me today. That thing is an absolute ruck us . Totally ridiculous. Frickin’ crazy.

You know I read this post by you yesterday and thought to myself “Yeah it makes sense to be more scared of a random weirdo in the wilderness than a predictable animal” and now look at this news article that came out today.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cbsnews.com/amp/news/tristan-beaudette-killed-camping-malibu-creek-state-park-update/

Freakin scientist gets shot by a random person right in front of his two young daughters while camping. Broke my fucking heart. If I ever go camping I’m bringing some shit with me.

Sweet little pistol. Kinda seems a waste to have such a short barrel - you’re leaving a lot of potential velocity at the table.
