$400 for a 30yo bicycle? Nope. Nuh-uh. Not unless this actual bike was in the TDF. Which it wasn't.

The exponential price growth of decent 1980s-90s bikes is not dissimilar to air cooled Porsche prices. 15 years ago my wife and I walked into a goodwill and grabbed a very nice Raleigh for her for $20 with 7 speed Shimano 105; perfect paint; and even a chain and cassette with life on it. Someone offered her $200 for it once; she rejected because she knew she’d pay the same or more to get something comparable.
$400 is CP for that bike though.

I wish i understood the bike market. People acuse cars of looking samey but the the proper bike geometry seems to of been found 40 years ago.
Sure theres lighter components and theyve moved the shifters into the brakes. But i dont see why anyone would spend more than a couple hundred on a road bike of any age unless youre really into racing.

You are more intelligent than +90% of people who walk into a bike shop. I own a carbon road bike with flat top tube and threaded bottom bracket. It was raced professionally in the top tier less than a decade ago. Cost was more than a couple hundred but far less than the $5-$20K people pay for some of these nowadays.
I will guarantee you the difference between an overpriced noodly steel bike and a well sorted carbon bike costing twice that $400 would be very apparent to you. Riding a bike should be fun and in many cases it is not. Too many people don’t even consider this as a requirement and just buy the newest fanciest most expensive mass produced vehicle for hyped up marketing their local T/S only store that put the local bike shop out of business carries

I scoff at a lockable bike carrying such components but... The money might not be in the frame you are focusing on. R are vintage parts will drive up the price very quickly.
Case in point: The Dura Ace 7400 stem and 7410 headset I rode hard for many many many years sold for considerable amounts all things considered.

I’ll give you 40 bucks.
Old steel bikes are only good for display or a fixie. Even my Aluminum Cannondale is better than any 80s steelie.

Oh that’s sad to see the lugs all rusty, if it was in perfect condition maybe $400 but not in this condition.

Not sure it’s worth even $40.
