"Chinny Raccoon" (chinnyraccoon)

Surprisingly reasonable results from the first attempt, especially considering the setup is far from ideal- outside, no oil/water separator on the compressor, a 3D printed tribo gun from Lithuania, powder that arrived in a package that looked like a something the police would show off boasting of it’s street value and cured with a heat gun.
The tribo guns don’t use a high voltage generator, the powder runs through some Teflon strips that create the charge. It’s supposed to require a special powder, but my eBay special stuff seems to work fine.
Now I just need to build an oven that can fit a wheel in.

That looks pretty good!
Maybe you can build a big enough oven using some bricks, with some kind of industrial heater below it.

If you have room for it, time to get on craigslist and find a cheap/free electric oven. That turned out pretty well even with the heat gun, though!

The problem with kitchen ovens is that you can’t fit very large wheels in them. Back when I was powdercoating, I think the biggest wheel I could safely fit in the spare oven I picked up was a 15x7 .
A commercial pizza oven is a better bet.

Unfortunately our British ovens are smaller than the typical US ovens. Though I’ve only got 15” wheel they won’t easily fit. I’ve been hunting for commercial ovens, but a lot of those are 415v which we don’t have wired to the workshop yet. Also, they tend to be expensive, especially the 230v ones.
A metal box with some insulation, PID controller and oven element is probably what I’ll end up doing.

That's neat. Makes me want to try that.

I saw a video on YouTube where they bought stuff from harbor freight that did a good job. I imagine if you wanted to make money off it you’d want better equipment but just for fun or personal use I imagine it’s pretty good

I’ve never heard of using a heat gun to do powder coating. Neat.

If you can get ahold of to regular ovens like here in the USA, then you can make a bigger oven. My oven for my business is 6'x 44" x 44" which cost me $3500. But if you look on the internet, there’s tons of information on how to build your own oven, that’s what I’m doing for my 10ft oven. When I was in your position, just starting off in the powder coating world, I found that www.eastwood.com was a big help, and it has tons of info and equipment for the dyi hobbyists. Before I went pro, that’s were I started off. I bought their how to book, and watched lots of videos. Another place that is very helpful is www.powderbuythepound.com join their forum, there are lots of beginners there, hobbyists, and pros including myself. Their are discussions, problem solving, and tons and tons of info on different diy projects for building your own ovens, spray booths, and steps to get the perfect Finnish. Welcome to the addiction.

It’s probably not the best way to do it, but it worked ok. It helped that mine has a digital temperature control.

Yes, this is just for odd bits and pieces. The main motivation is a stack of wheels that need refurbing and not wanting to pay £40 each to have them done.

Replacement oven elements and temperature controllers are super cheap. I’m thinking of an insulated metal box as it can be made portable for storage.

Ah didn’t know that. That sounds like a much better solution than what I suggested, haha

Interesting. Don’t mind me asking, but which heat gun do you have?
Using a heat gun could also mean doing larger or more awkward shaped items that you would otherwise be able to fit in a traditional oven.
