My commute is 5 miles. It’s not going well:
Seriously considering getting a daily to go with the Mustang...

Just get another Mustang with the V6 . My rental Challenger is getting 24 mpg and is still lots of fun to daily. I’m sure the little Mustang does just as well. Of course, you can buy a LOT of fuel for the price of a second car, even a cheap one.

Get a scooter or cheap motorcycle.

They barely warm at that distance. My car has been getting abysmal fuel economy due to the rare short drives I mostly do. It wouldn’t even warm up in the 3.5 mile drive to work I used to do, either, which kills fuel economy.

Get another vehicle if you want one, but you're not going to save a plug nickel. I too have about a 5-mile commute, and I do it in a gas guzzler. I've run the numbers, and even when gas was over $4/gallon, it is cheaper to simply buy some more gas, than it is to buy, insure, register, and maintain even a beater. I ran those numbers six ways from Sunday, because I want another smaller stick shift vehicle to make parking easier and have some fun with, but I could not find a way to justify it financially.

My commute is 3.5 miles and after the first week in the 128i, I’m sitting at 17.2 mpg. Neither of the Mazdas got great mileage for a small 4-cylinder car, but this is a new low.
I’ve started to consider if biking is a viable option…

That commute screams i3.

That’s actually worse than my ‘93 F150. But a 5 mile commute is not going to break the bank even at that number

It sucks right? It’s almost always cheaper to run your current vehicle with crap MPG than get another one, unless your seriously commuting a long distance. Even my 12 mile commute doesn’t pass the “financially responsible” test for getting a small fuel efficient car.

I ran the math, it’s absolutely not cost effective to get another car. I did not factor in limiting depreciation on the Mustang by keeping miles off it, but since I’m nearing 50,000 miles I doubt it would make much difference now.

Because “woof.” That’s the first thing I think of, unfortunately.
