Kinja'd!!!

This has a similar symbolical meaning as in the US

Trying to research some facts about cycling numbers in Mexico City I typed into google “Numero de ciclistas en Mexico” and google gave me back the results of all of the cyclists that are murdered, including the owner of a telecom company and three tourists.

I tend to ignore stories about violence because it’s a given I live in a dangerous country, and it’s funnier to read the comment section on how FIFA fined the Mexican Football Federation for the stupid assholes in Russia shouting a homophobic slur.

But man, May has been the most deadly month on record since records are kept about violence, and our homicide rate is set to reach almost ten homicides per 100,000 inhabitants, its a ludicrous number! Just today, the police killed four people and arrested 25 suspects for a fucking gun fight in Mexico City... It’s not 1810, I thought we didn’t have actual Mexican Standoffs anymore!

We’re also having a spike of crimes against women, so called feminicidios are investigated as hate crimes atop being murders. Just a few days ago a trans woman was murdered, but, in a turn of events, LGBTQ+ groups are calling for the investigation to be carried out as a hate crime, so I guess we’ve got a bit of inclusion and acceptance in an otherwise dreadful situation.

But these are due to pockets of violence, as I said before, I live in a country of bubbles, like Mexico City that has a fairly respectable 5.5 per 100k, it used to be closer to 3 but something is something!

It’s lower than Boston’s 5.7, so suck it Boston!

“Just today, the police killed four people and arrested 25 suspects for a fucking gun fight in Mexico City...”

I honestly don’t know if the media’s perception of violence in Mexico is reality or not, but my home state and (parts) of the US aren’t any better.

There was a massive (well, two douche bags and the police) shoot-out.

Camden’s muder rate in 2012 was  87 per 100k. Yup. Not 8.7. 87. So there’s that.

Well, Mexico’s overal homicide rate is double that of the US. You also have to keep in mind that crime is concentrated in some areas (Colima is the state with the highest homicide rate and it’s 33/100k ) and tends to be quite graphic. You also should keep in mind that Mexico has really strict gun control laws... yet we have a lot of gun problems because we have a really bad border police that doesn’t stop gunrunners from the US.

Mexico’s rate is actually almost four times the US’ ( 19.26 vs 5.35). But honestly I’m kinda jealous of that figure, we had 61k murders last year (29.53 rate), literally 100 times  as much homicides as Canada

Where did you see that figure. I’m not gonna dispute it because when it comes to crime in Latin America the numbers tend to be higher always. But Animal Politico reported that the average rate for the last six months has been 9.17 /100k. But it’s rubbish because three years ago it was 5.25/100k

United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_intentional_homicide_rate

That data is for the full year   , so a 9.17 for a semester is likely correct for Mexico

Mexico City proper (not counting the metro area) has a murder rate of around 9,6 per 100k, statistically much safer than Chicago, Atlanta, Washington DC , Pittsburgh , Philadelphia, Miami, Dallas, Houston and many other major US cities. Boston’s rate  is 7,27

Damn, I need to update my homicide rate statistics.

Also, thank you for not including the metro area, as far as I’m concerned those Priista wannabies can have their own statistics (which are probably worse)

We need to take into account the amount of crime that isn’t reported in Mexico... its a genuine issue.... though you must be pretty crazy not to report a homicide.

Yeah, pretty sure the rate would go above double digits if I went for the metro. It is the same thing for São Paulo, the city itself is safe  (7,8) but neighboring Osasco is 18,94...

I’m surprised it’s not worse in Iztapalapa, as not only is it a very poor area of the city, it is also right next to Ciudad Neza; which was known for being very unsafe a few years ago. It was actually where the telecom guy was shot dead.

Funny thing is, he died from a stray bullet from his own body guards.
