According to a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) (uncovered by the website The Truth About Cars ), Mazda might be using the same 2.5-liter turbocharged engine found on the CX-9 in its best-selling CX-5, too. The document pictured here shows Mazda testing the engine on both vehicles in the U.S. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

What the CX5 needs is the manual with the big engine and AWD.

There is totally enough room under the hood of a CX-3 for this engine. Make it so, I want a hot small crossover without paying for a GLA AMG-45

Hah! Keep dreaming. They won’t even do 2.5T AWD manual(or even Auto) Speed6 for crying out loud.

I do blame Mazda though, they gave the CX5 a manual ONLY with the gutless 2.0 (which they eventually decided wasn’t a great engine after all for this car) and then threw their hands up when people *shock* chose the bigger engine with the auto instead. “hmm, must have been the manual that turned people away.” Uh. no. The fact that it sold as well as it did with the 2.0 ought to have been proof of concept for the 2.5 manual

How about putting a better engine in the CX-9?

I’ll be in the market pretty soon, but it doesn’t sound like that will happen.

Wait, what? You don’t like the 2.5T in the CX-9? Why? I felt it’s perfectly suited for what it is and the engine has been getting high priase in almost all reviews.

In any case given Mazda’s scale and R&D budget something big is not going to happen anytime soon.

Damn you, Mazda - finally putting decent horsepower in your more common offerings. Why couldn’t you have been doing this (or even SkyActiv) when you sold the Mazda5 here in the US? What I wouldn’t do for another 93 horses.

Of course, it would be automatic-only and only on the top trim lines full of electronic gimmickry and easily broken toys I don’t want, so forget I said anything...

*used in three years.

You might have actually bought one, but a vast majority of people who say they want things like that don’t buy them, hence why we’re not getting a manual M5 anymore.

No, I would have bought one new. I even test drove the 2.0 before deciding against it. I bought a forester XT 5 speed instead. Later when my wife was looking at them her main turnoff was the lack of a manual, so we didn’t buy one. I mean we still ended up with an auto but we also ended up with 8 seats so a manual was never an option to begin with but her losing her 6 speed manual tdi was hard on her too. No good choices out there.

With a manual, a lowering kit, and removal of the “rugged” stuff and that would totally be something I’d consider replacing my WRX with.

They will eventually, but not in your time frame if you’re about to start shopping.

I remember when they said the NA Skyactiv had enough power. I remember when they said the engine was too high compression for a turbo. I remember when they said a good balanced roadster shouldn’t have too much power.

Until they worked up to doing it. This will happen too, but not quickly for a company of their resources.

I think if companies started using crossovers in rally and rallycross a lot of ire would suddenly vanish for the platform.

I think there’s potential in the platform for enthusiasts but you’re right currently they’re marketed for appliance-buyers. Toyota does have a rally RAV4 though...

I made the mistake of getting faster cars and now the 5 is just... slow. And now that I’m mostly doing solo city driving 21mpg, basic AND slow has my eye wandering.

As long as I don’t drive anything else, the 5 is acceptably fast, although if I had the automatic I probably would not be saying that. If I drive 100 miles per week I’ve been quite busy, and that doesn’t happen these days when my commute is about 2 miles.

Basic works for me these days, and I really don’t miss the toys I’ve had in other vehicles. Leaky sunroofs, jammed power seats and expensive HID headlight replacements are things I can happily do without. I’ve got a good stereo, comfortable seats, automatic climate control, and really don’t need more than that, but YMMV.

I agree, over bite but I may replace my 2013 CX5 that I bought in 2012 with the underpowered 2.0 engine if they offer the 2.5 turbo. I’ve been considering the new Acura RDX but a 250 hp engine in a CX 5 may change my mind.
