Meet the Arado Ar-196, standard shipboard plane of the Kriegsmarine in WW2. As we can see, it was dispatched from a remarkably short catapult. Later on in the war it was necessarily land based due to absence of ships.
Power by a nine cylinder BMW unit, not a thing often encountered.
Interestingly, Arado were by the 1930s owned by Heinrich Lübbe who was forced to sell the company to the state after he refused invitations to join the Nazi party. (and was arrested for his trouble).

Was that a radial engine? I believe all radials are odd number cylinders.

Sure was. That’s why the engine cowling is the shape it is with an open area behind the prop. A conventional engine would have a streamlined cowling.

Point of order: The BMW 132 engine was an improved version of the P&W Hornet, licensed by BMW in 1928, and over twenty-one thousand were built, mostly for the Ju-52 airliner/transport.

Wouldn’t that be more a point of information?

The double row engines that came later in the war had an even number of cylinders, but you’re right, each row needs an odd number, usually 7 or 9.

Cool plane!
Was the standard procedure for taking off was to redline the engine, and release the catapult?

Presumably - that’s what they do on carriers today. Much lower take off speeds then of course so they could make do with such a short “run”.

Also many of the early catapults were hydraulic. Some rare examples would use a blank 5" shell to help launch.
The british had a few crazy designs with rockets

The blank 5 shell probably scared the hell out of new pilots the first few times.
