Tell me all you know/rank the five pictured cars (SH, VTEC, and Type-S trim levels for the first three) in the following categories:

1. Daily driveability

2. Handling

3. Reliability

I have a general idea, just seeking other opinions.

Answering a question you didn’t ask: if you plan to throw a bunch of mods at the engine (i.e. turbo kit or aiming to raise horsepower by a ton), don’t get the SH Prelude. I keep hearing that the ATTS system’s clutches start slipping before you even hit 250 hp at the wheels.

Otherwise, I imagine that in similar condition the Miatas would school the Hondas in handling. Reliability should favor the K20 in the RSX Type-S over the H22A in the 4th and 5th gen Preludes, but this is all going to be dependent on how well each example was cared for previously. The H22 is notorious for burning oil.

I’ve only driven each (save the fifth gen, still own it) for short stints, so I won’t speak to DD rankings.

1. If I managed to find an SH, then I wouldn’t plan on modding it- so the ATTS wouldn’t be a problem.

2. Do you know how much the ATTS improves the handling of the 5th-gen? Basically, how much worse, if at all, is the base model as compared to the SH?

Not really an option for me, but probably an absolute beast- and great looking to boot.

My opinion is that the SH raises the threshold of understeer over a traditional front-wheel drive car of similar sporty intent, but only if you’re doing seriously spirited driving or track/autocross. When you’re commuting, you won’t notice any difference. If you push it, the fronts still give up first, certainly, but the ATTS system makes the car feel more neutral until that higher limit. The fifth-gen base model is heavier than a fourth generation and the SH about another 50-100 lbs on top of that, so out of those two factors, I’d say the mid-nineties VTEC has an edge out of the three Hondas (if you didn’t go with an SH for comparison)—wild, unfounded guess, I’d rank it this way:

5th gen Prelude SH

4th gen Prelude VTEC

RSX Type-S

5th gen Prelude base

Keep in mind, the RSX went to MacPhereson struts up front—I’m no suspension guru, but it’s my understanding that the double-wishbone configuration is better for camber in cornering (or something, someone smarter correct me, here). One last thing, the ATTS system adds time and difficulty to changing a clutch on the car.

I know nothing of consequence about Miatas, sorry.

Miata

1. Daily driveability

I daily my 1991 with 204k miles. Unless you’re hailing big things, it’s great. It takes my roomate and I to work every day, gets 26mpg on shitty CA gas, and even fits a couple backpacks or some luggage in the small trunk. That said, not a cargo hauler by any means. Honestly, I never feel too slow even with the 1.6L in traffic - you just wind the snot out of it.

2. Handling

I put Flyin Miata Stage 2 suspension on mine with 15x7 wheels/tires. It’s like driving a race car. Combine the stiff suspension with full throttle around town and you’re apexing the fuck out life. It’s a Miata, so you know - basically the best handling car under 50k.

3. Reliability

Depends. How was the car treated and are you a wrench? People routinely get 200-300k miles out of the 1st and 2nd gen motors. By that point, most people also blow them up with 21 lbs of boost and an ebay turbo. They have their common leaks (cam angle sensor, water pump, etc) and you want to make sure the timing belt is recent. Aside from that, just enjoy it. When you start to work on a Miata you feel like a hero because most stuff is fairly easy and well engineered. There are so many times working on the car that I think “they could have screwed this up by trying to make it better” and yet they didn’t. Plus, parts are cheap and if you want upgraded stuff, the sky is the limit. Aaaaand there are 20 youtube videos for any repair.

I have a base model 5th gen Prelude and have owned a 4th gen VTEC. They’re pretty similar and make good dailies, although with the age it’s common to have little things go wrong with them. The 4th gen handles a little better due to the lighter weight, but the 5th gen has a little more room. Can’t speak for the rest.
