Called it! I commented on a video of one of the beta testers for the series that they needed to add more “hero” cars that weren’t necessarily driven by Senna or Schumacher. I specifically called out the brawn but I also want to see Kimi’s Lotus from 2012 (The “leavemealoneIknowwhatIamdoing” car) and Sergio Perez’s Sauber that he got 3 podiums in one season with (and kobayashi got one!).

No, Kubica’s BMW-Sauber 2008 car first, then 60's to 80's cars.
If you think about it you don’t actually need to complete every car per year, just the ones that matter per era and four starting cars from weaker teams.

Related: I made this a long while back as a dream arcade F1 game, based on a reddit thread of what your dream f1 starting grid would look like.
What do you think?

So when I thought of what I wanted, I pitched it for a new challenge mode. I focused more on V10-era and later challenges, but you could do historical ones too. So you include kimi’s car so you can do a mission called “Leave me alone” where you basically manage the car while sustaining attack from alonso’s ferrari and vettel’s red bull and the like and trying to win the abu dhabi grand prix. And while it wouldn’t be 100% accurate (difficulty settings to account for and whatnot) you could make it so you’ve just made the last pit stop so it’s a straight up “Survive X number of laps in the lead in an inferior car”. And I had a few others like with Perez’s Sauber - Beat Fernando! Get ahead and stay ahead of the Ferrari! Or defend against Kimi Raikonnen’s Ferrari as Fisichella in a force india at I believe Hockenheim after Massa’s injury.
I can see wanting to have the important cars....But honestly I’m tired of the dick sucking of the biggest stars. I try to watch Senna era races and they’re boring. THey’re fun in a “HOLY SHITBALLS THIS GUY IS AMAZING!” way, but they descend into retirement fests and just processional affairs. I feel like fans love to overlook that part when sharing clips - a clip is not a race. I can distill almost any F1 race into a decent 2-minute clip show. But let’s show some love to the more subtle races. Let’s borrow their own tagline and highlight the cars and moments that “Made headlines”. If only for a little bit.
Hey, let’s have some fun with this! Scenario - Singapore 2008. Can you win as Alonso without Piquet crashing? Take it back a bit - Ratzenberger’s simtek. Can you score points at san marino? Oh let’s dig deep for this one....Take one of the races that Arrows got second place at. WIn it. Do what the entire team couldn’t for almost 20 years!!!!
I’m not at all saying you need every car from every era. But I am saying you need to do more than just have some classic cars and have the biggest ones from the brightest stars. And I fully agree that you shouldn’t just have a random old car to have it. No one really wants to drive the WR1 from Walter Wolf Racing off the top of their head but if you can make a compelling story behind some missions and build up the hype and mystique of it all, I think it’d be compelling and certainly add on to the gameplay in a different, yet still fundamental way.
At least, that’s how I feel. I just yearn for something, anything, to shake up the series and make me not regret buying an updated version.

There were historic challenges in 90's F1 games, actually. Some of the ones for the N64 have it. Really fun, though I used an emulator so I dunno how it’d fare.
My idea is a straight arcade game with semi-realistic graphics that look great but not photorealistic (though I want VR, so yeah that can change). It would have RPG-like elements, with buffs and active effects and passives that relate to the team, car and driver, while suppliers and tires are tiered (Pirelli is fast but fragile, Bridgestone slower but tougher, Michelin the midpoint). You have historic cars, a current-season design, and a futuristic concept design to choose from, plus a boss ladder and arcade endings like fighting games. How’s my driver line-up?

Gonna be brutally honest - I disagree with your entire scheme on the premise that for a video game, trying to assign drivers/teams/engines suppliers to those they were never partners with or were never teammates with is a bit much.
And to be specific - Takuma Sato is BAR-Honda for me while SUrtees is Ferrari, Toro Rosso is powered by FERRARI not alfa, mInardi would have Mark Webber since you said Red Bull didn’t get him and I refuse to recognize Jaguar since it was a joke of a team the whole time, also speaking of jokes, why the fuck is Benetton a British company? They’re ITALIAN! Yeah they had an HQ in the UK but so does Force India and yet you classify them correctly as Indian!
I’ll be blunt again in summary - I feel like if your idea as a whole was implemented it would lead to more arguments than agreements. So you’d end up with a lot of people unhappy because of it. This is all before you go trying to classify differences in performance between drivers and whatnot.

I know, much of the lineups are entirely nonsensical (not the Arrows, though, I’ll fight that), and even then I missed even more names like Fittipaldi and Coulthard Rosberg (both of them), plus 2K Sports-like elements to real-life entities this cutthroat can definitely drive a schism in the fanbase.
Honestly, though, I still like the idea of a car AND driver roster over the years. May not need to be a lock—it’s a patently bad idea in hindsight—but if I can mix and match drivers based on which teams they were in, like Alonso for example, and have an experience where one can race against greats...I just feel like scenario modes are limiting.
Jeez, yeah, it just hit me—I was wanting a Formula 1 2K game. FUCK!
