Kinja'd!!!

Those are the fuel bowl inlet screens off the RX-7. Here’s the fuel filter.

Delicious! I guess I’ve been half wrong in touting that there is zero rust on this car - it seems to be inside the fuel tank. I’ll have to keep an eye on the new filter (and those screens), if it keeps up I may add a second filter right before the inlet of the carb (the one shown is right before the pump back by the gas tank) to hopefully keep this crap out of the carb/engine. I believe this filter was new when I got the car 1 year ago.

Here’s how much crap I cleaned out of those screens and associated banjo fittings.

That container of carb cleaner smells wonderful sitting on the bench.

Fortunately it did a good job of keeping most of it out of the bowls, only wiped a bit out of them. As a bonus anecdote, while changing the fuel filter, I disconnected it and not only did it start pouring gas down my arm, but also right into my drop light! Exciting! I unplugged it at the wall to avoid Fiery Death.

Much as I hate dirty filters, it’s neat to see them in the act of saving the engine.

There was a bit in the bowls but not a whole lot, so hopefully minimal-to-none made its way through the jets and into the engine. Little bits of rust going round and round and round are great for the rotor housings and apex seals.

Here’s something weird - got it all back together with these screens cleaned out, fuel filter replaced, and a new OEM fuel pump. Now the bowls are way over-full and I need to adjust the floats. I have to wonder if the pressure at the needle/seat was that low before (they were right on up until now) that now with full pressure it’s pushing past the needles to fill the bowl that much further until the floats finally are pushing up enough to seal it off

Hm, yeah could be. It was probably adjusted to make up for the partially-clogged filters and needs to be re-set now. All the more reason to do something about that tank (or wherever else the crap might be coming from). Are tanks for this application hard to find?

Hard to find? Not really; Impossible, yes.

Dang. Well, if it’s not beyond saving, I guess you could Kreem it.

No idea how bad it is. I’ve got it all back together and running very well now (no surprise there) but am considering adding another filter right at the carb inlet.
